Kono has six-shot lead in German golf event

Punahou School sophomore Stephanie Kono shot a second-round 71 yesterday to boost her lead to six strokes at the Harder German Junior Masters golf tournament in Heddesheim.

Kono bogeyed the second hole for the second straight day, then played the final 16 holes in 3-under with birdies at Nos. 4, 6 and 17. She'll take a 36-hole total of 5-under 141 into today's final round.

Ireland's Danielle McVeigh (71) and Germany's Andrea Wittek (75) share second at 147. No other golfer is within nine shots.

Kono earned an all-expenses-paid invitation to the Junior Masters by leading wire-to-wire at the Westfield Junior PGA Championship this summer.


MORE GOLF

HAYNIE QUALIFIES

Gary Haynie shot a 4-over-par 75 Tuesday to win the USGA Senior Amateur Sectional Qualifier at the O'ahu Country Club.

Haynie earns a berth in the national event, which will be played at Rocky Face, Ga., Sept. 17 to 22.

Tom Goodbody (76) is the first alternate and Roy Nishimoto (77) is the second alternate.

JUNIORS TAKE TITLES

Kelli Oride, Robert Greenleaf, Ayaka Kaneko and Mike Garcia won their respective age divisions of the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association's Junior Tour Series yesterday at the Mauna Lani Golf Club.

Oride (girls 13-14) shot 82, Greenleaf (boys 13-14) 75, Kaneko (girls 15-18) 71 and Garcia (boys 15-18) 70 at the par-72 South Course.

The series continues today with an 18-hole tournament at Mauna Lani's North Course.

ROWE SWIMS IN 12TH

Wailuku's Caleb Rowe, a 2001 Baldwin High graduate, finished 12th in the 50-meter breaststroke yesterday at the World University Games in Izmur, Turkey.

Oleg Lisogor of Ukraine won the event in a games record time of 27.63. Kevin Swander was the top U.S. finisher, taking fifth in 28.34. Rowe, swimming in the "B" final, had a time of 28.71.

In taekwondo, Hawai'i's Stephanie Beckel lost her opening featherweight match against Brazil's Cida Santana, 13-6.

The U.S. men's volleyball team, with Kane'ohe's Brian Zodrow, swept Korea, 25-22, 26-24, 25-23, in the first round of consolation play.


VOLLEYBALL

LOS ALAMITOS SWEEPS

Highly regarded Los Alamitos (Calif.) swept its four opening matches yesterday in the Ann Kang Invitational Girls Volleyball Tournament at Iolani School.

Los Alamitos defeated Kalani, 25-14, 25-21; Hawai'i Baptist, 25-19, 25-13; Bakersfield (Calif.), 25-17, 25-17, and Maryknoll, 25-16, 25-18.

Los Alamitos advanced to the championship bracket, along with Bakersfield, Kahuku and Redondo Union (Calif.).

Pool play in two other divisions will be held today, starting at 10 a.m.

TEAM USA NOW 3-0

Team USA improved to 3-0 in pool play with a sweep of Canada at the 2005 FIVB Women's World Championship Qualification Tournament in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

Punahou graduate Lindsey Berg is the U.S. setter. Former Rainbow Wahine Therese Crawford is also on the team.

FIGURE SKATING



NAKAKURA PLACES FIFTH

University of Hawai'i's Asia Nakakura placed fifth in the junior ladies finals of the U.S. National Collegiate Figure Skating Championships last week at the Ice Palace.

Seventy-two skaters — all full-time college students in the top two levels of U.S. Figure Skating, junior and senior — competed in the first national figure skating competition held in Hawai'i.

Nakakura, 19, of Pearl City, was the top skater in her qualifying round.

UH's Kellie Nakamura, 19, of Kane'ohe, placed 12th in the senior ladies silver round group B division.


SURFING

MEISTER, HO PREVAIL

Torey Meister of the Big Island and Coco Ho of Sunset Beach won the top divisions of the Rip Curl Grom Search last weekend at Kewalo Basin.

Meister posted scores of 9.5 and 9.25 (out of 10) to win the boys' 16-and-younger division.

Ho, who is 14 and the daughter of North Shore surfer Michael Ho, beat several older girls to win the girls' 16-and-younger division.

Derek Wong won the boys' 14-and-younger division, and Ezekiel Lau won the boys' 12-and-younger division.

All the division winners earned an invitation to the Nov. 5 national championships at Salt Creek, Calif. The national winners will then compete in the world championships at Australia next year.


TENNIS

SECTIONALS TOMORROW

More than 450 tennis players are expected at the 2005 USA League Tennis Hawai'i Pacific Adult Sectional Championships, tomorrow through Sunday on Maui.

The tournament begins at 8 a.m. each day at Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch (headquarters), Hyatt Regency Maui, Marriott Tennis Complex, Lahaina Civic Courts, and the Kapalua Tennis Garden.

A total of 47 teams qualified by winning their local leagues. Sectional champions represent the U.S. Tennis Association-Hawai'i Pacific Section at the USA League Tennis National Championships.

There are more than 550,000 participants in USA League Tennis nationally.
