Child's disorder burdens family of 3

L.S. lives with her boyfriend and their 5-year-old daughter in transitional housing. Neither could afford to get a place on their own but recently moved into housing for homeless families in Leeward O'ahu.
While the two were apart, they struggled to care for their daughter, who has been diagnosed with Rett syndrome — a debilitating neurological disorder.
L.S.'s boyfriend works full time in construction and L.S. works part time so that she can be home for her daughter. But even with the couple's combined incomes, they find it difficult to make ends meet.
Their child's neurological disorder causes her to have frequent seizures and fall. She also scratches herself often.
The family's caseworker said caring for the child is often physically and emotionally draining. Because the family has only one car, L.S. often has to take her daughter to medical appointments by bus.
The family is receiving public assistance for medical care, said the caseworker.
L.S. and her boyfriend are hoping for a full-size bed with box spring and sheets. They also need towels and a first-aid kit with bandages of various sizes.
Our anonymous Santa is matching the first $25 of each donation to the Christmas Fund.
Christmas Fund donations are used for families who need help through the holidays. Any money remaining after the holidays will be used to help those in need throughout the year.
