Players from Hawai'i reach NCAA volleyball's Sweet 16

Washington, Santa Clara, and Pepperdine, with six volleyball players from Hawai'i among them, have advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Women's Division I Tournament.
Washington (28-1) plays Purdue (25-8), and Santa Clara (25-4) takes on Pepperdine (19-11).
Washington, with sophomore defensive specialist Ashley Aratani (Iolani '04) and freshman setter Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani '05), who is redshirting, advanced with wins over Siena and Colorado State.
Santa Clara (23-4), with sisters Kristen (senior setter, attended Maryknoll) and Michelle Luxton (freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist, Punahou '05), advanced with wins over Sacramento State and Stanford.
Pepperdine, with junior libero Kekai Crabbe (Kamehameha '03) and sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Lecca Roberts (Seabury Hall '04), advanced with wins over Brigham Young and Southern California.
MORE WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
College of Southern Idaho freshman outside hitter/setter Aneli Cubi-Otineru (Punahou '05) was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-America first team.
Cubi-Otineru averaged 3.65 kills per game, with a .350 hitting percentage. She also had 2.67 digs per game.
College of Southern Idaho won the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship by beating Miami-Dade College, 30-24, 30-20, 30-23.
Barton County Community College (Great Bend, Kan.) sophomore middle Sunshine Misa-Uli (Farrington '04) was named to the second team.
Misa-Uli averaged 4.32 kills per game, good for seventh in the nation. Her nearly two blocks a contest were eighth nationally.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Gonzaga junior point guard Rachel Kane (Punahou '03) underwent successful surgery to reconstruct the ACL on her right knee last Thursday. Kane injured her knee during her freshman year and tore the ACL during an exhibition game on Nov. 12.
Columbia junior forward Becky Hogue (Punahou '03 of Kailua) was named to the all-tournament team at the Contra Costa Times Classic this past weekend in Berkeley, Calif. Hogue had 15 points and 15 rebounds in a 58-54 loss to Albany.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Webster (St. Louis, Mo.) senior forward Christian Basilio (Hilo '02) was named to the Sodexho Classic All-Tournament team held at Maryville University, Nov. 18 and 19.
Basilio had 11 points, five rebounds two blocks in a 71-68 overtime loss to Hanover College, and collected six points, eight rebounds and one block in a 64-33 loss to Transylvania College.
Colorado School of Mines (Golden, Colo.) freshman guard Kyle Pape (Iolani '05) averaged 16.5 points in two games last week, including a career-high 19 in a 93-66 win over Bethany Lutheran.
FOOTBALL
San Diego State senior defensive lineman Kurt Kahui (Baldwin of Wailuku), who played against Hawai'i this past weekend, was named to the Mountain West Conference second team. He tied for fourth on the Aztecs in tackles with 72, including five for losses of 31 yards.
Colorado sophomore linebacker Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04) and senior defensive tackle Vaka Manupuna (Saint Louis '01 of Kihei) were named All-Big 12 honorable mention.
Tennessee senior defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona (Kealakehe '01 of Kailua, Kona) earned an honorable mention Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference team nod.
Portland State sophomore offensive lineman Brennan Carvalho (Kamehameha '04 of Kapa'a) was named to the Big Sky Conference first team.
Nebraska-Omaha senior offensive lineman Scott Lee (Kaua'i '00 of Koloa) was named to the All-North Central Conference second team.
Occidental (Los Angeles) senior receiver Ric Fukushima (Moanalua '02 of Waipahu) was named the recipient of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's John Zinda Award for athletic performance, sportsmanship, and academics.
Fukushima also earned All-SCIAC first-team honors, along with senior safety Derek Turbin (Punahou '02).
Gavilan College (Gilroy, Calif.) sophomore receiver Shane Butcher (Saint Louis '03) was named to the all-Coast Conference team.
MEN'S SOCCER
Santa Rosa Junior College (Calif.) freshman forward/midfielder RB Bibilone (Leilehua '05) assisted on the lone goal in a 1-0 win over American River on Saturday.
SRJC advances to the final four, which matches the top two JC teams from Northern California against the top two in Southern California.
SRJC will go to Fresno as the top NorCal team and open Saturday at 2 p.m. against the No. 2 SoCal squad, Rio Hondo. The final four is at Fresno Pacific University.
