William Moeava has stepped down as head coach for McKinley High School's football team after three seasons.

Moeava cited a desire to spend more time with his two sons, ages 3 and 18 months, and also pursue a degree in human services from the University of Phoenix.

"With my boys at this age, they need a lot more time and attention," Moeava said. "I wasn't able to give them as much time as I wanted while I was coaching."

McKinley went 8-16-1 in Moeava's three years at the helm, including 2-6 this past season. But Moeava also was the Tigers' JV head coach before that and coached many players who helped the varsity program reach the state semifinals in 2002 — its highest finish ever.

Moeava spent a total of seven years coaching McKinley football.

"It was a good ride, and maybe this is just a hiatus," Moeava said. "I'm thankful for the opportunity to coach, and whoever takes over will be handed a very good group of kids."

The Tigers had only nine seniors on this past season's roster.
