Isle players in volleyball semis

Four players with Hawai'i ties are in this week's Women's Division I Volleyball national semifinals.
Kristen Luxton, a senior setter and team co-captain who attended Maryknoll, and sister Michelle, a freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist who graduated from Punahou, are a part of a Santa Clara team making its first national semifinal appearance.
Sophomore defensive specialist Ashley Aratani, an Iolani alum, and freshman setter Tamari Miyashiro, a Kalani graduate, are members of a Washington team advancing for the second straight year.
Santa Clara (27-4) plays top-seeded Nebraska (32-1) in tomorrow's semifinals at San Antonio. Washington (30-1) plays Tennessee (25-8) in the other semifinal.
The championship is Saturday.
FOOTBALL
San Diego State senior defensive end Kurt Kahui (Baldwin of Wailuku) was awarded the Byron H. Chase Memorial Award for the most outstanding defensive player at the team's banquet. He also was voted the team's most inspirational player.
Utah junior offensive lineman Tavo Tupola (Kahuku '99) was named to the Mountain West Conference second team.
Central Missouri State senior offensive lineman Darryl Grace (Konawaena of Captain Cook) was named to the American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches' All-America Team, made up of players from NAIA and NCAA Division II institutions. Grace anchored a line that helped the team average 40 points and 419.5 yards a game.
Palomar College (San Marcos) inside linebacker Lui Suiaunoa (Kalaheo) was named to the Mission Conference American Division first team.
Golden West (Huntington Beach, Calif.) guard Tua Marasco (Kahuku of La'ie), freshman tight end Stanley Malamala (Lahainaluna '05), and linebackers Loa Marasco (Kahuku of La'ie) and Lawrence Leovao ('Aiea '04) were named to the Mission Conference National Division second team.
West Hills College (Coalinga, Calif.) offensive guard Sean Yandall (Moanalua) was named to the Central Valley All-Conference first team and the All-State team, and was named an Academic All-American. He also was named the Dick Woodson Academic Champion at the team's awards banquet.
MEN'S SOCCER
Southern Methodist senior forward Duke Hashimoto (Iolani '02 of Kapolei) was named to the NSCAA/adidas Men's Division I All-America second team, after leading the Mustangs to the College Cup. He led SMU with 11 goals, and had seven assists.
The Santa Rosa Junior College men's soccer team advanced to the California Community College Commission On Athletics men's soccer championship game after a 3-2 double-overtime win over Fresno Pacific College, 3-2, Saturday.
Santa Rosa lost to Santa Ana, 3-1, in the championship Sunday.
Freshman midfielder Brady Nunes (Baldwin '05) headed in a long throw-in from Adam Shields to tie the game at 2 with less than three minutes to play in the semifinal game.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Menlo (Calif.) sophomore guard Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04 of Honolulu) scored 12 points in a 50-40 win over Notre Dame de Namur Saturday. Senior guard Shannon Riley (Maryknoll '02) had 10. Lee had 24 and Riley 13 in a 56-39 win over Holy Names on Friday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Brigham Young junior guard Rashaun Broadus (Mililani '02) had seven points, four rebounds and three assists in a 65-46 win over Northern Kentucky Saturday.
Washington State sophomore guard Derrick Low (Iolani '04) scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds, and had two assists and two steals in a 60-49 win over San Diego State on Saturday.
