TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE
"Heaven: Where Is It? How Do We Get There?" 8 p.m., ABC. The journey is what's fascinating in this documentary. Barbara Walters travels the globe, getting compelling glimpses. One moment, she's talking to the Dalai Lama, who has a warm and infectious laugh. He can't tell what will happen tomorrow, he says; he's lucky to remember what happened yesterday. Another moment, she's in an Israeli prison, talking to a young man who looks calm and smiles often. He's telling her why he attempted to kill himself and a crowd of innocent shoppers; only a bomb malfunction saved them. The young man tells Walters that she and others will burn in hell if they don't adopt his beliefs. Scholars from major religions describe a warm God who considers good deeds. Zealots disagree. For all the detours, this finds consensus. A world that agrees on almost nothing feels there is — for some people — a pleasant afterlife.
OF NOTE
"Everybody Hates Chris," 5 p.m., UPN (KIKU). In a transplanted rerun, Chris makes the mistake of letting a neighbor ride his new bike.
"NCIS," 7 and 8 p.m., CBS. Last season ended with Kate (Sasha Alexander) being killed. Now this well-crafted two-part rerun has the team frantically searching for the sniper, named Ari. Joining the show are a new boss (Lauren Holly) and the intriguing and mysterious Ziva (Cote de Pablo).
"My Name is Earl," 8 p.m., NBC. Here's a rerun of the episode in which Earl and Joy must pretend they're still married, to keep her parents happy.
"The Office," 8:30 p.m., NBC. Big trouble is caused by the gift swap at the office Christmas party.
"Eloise at Christmastime" (2003), 8 p.m., ABC Family. With a glowing warmth, both visually and emotionally, this is a feel-good film. Sofia Vassilieva, now of "Medium," is a delight as little Eloise, bouncing around a luxury hotel and affecting the lives of her nanny (Julie Andrews) and others.
"Frontline: The Secret History of the Credit Card," 9 p.m., PBS. Shortly after many viewers have put their debt into the stratosphere, "Frontline" reruns Lowell Bergman's report.
"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," 9 p.m., NBC. When a convicted sex criminal (played by Robert Patrick of "X-Files") gets out of jail, Stabler (Chris Meloni) goes dangerously undercover.
