Unity Church at Diamond Head will observe Kwanzaa at 6 p.m. Jan. 1 in a cultural celebration that reflects African culture. There will be music and sampling of African foods for a Kwanzaa feast.

'SACRED DANCER' TO SHARE MOVES

Joann Flanigan, a "sacred dancer" from Huntsville, Ala., will offer a workshop from 9:30 to 2:45 p.m. Jan. 14 at Calvary-by- the-Sea sanctuary, 5339 Kalaniana'ole Highway.

An optional presentation will be given at the 10 a.m. worship service the next day.

The workshop will include basic elements of dance, locomotor movements, dancing through the Pentecost theme (Acts 2:1-21) and preparation of a dance drama.

SHINTO SHRINE CEREMONY JAN. 1

The Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha-Hawaii Dazaifu Tenmangu, a Shinto shrine at 1239 Olomea St., is holding Hatsumode 2006 with a traditional New Year's blessing between midnight and 5 p.m. Jan. 1, with a Shishimai Lion Dance and complimentary bowls of ozoni mochi soup. Rick Beal, chief instructor of the Nanka Kyudo Kai of Pasadena, Calif., will launch an arrow of purification at 10 a.m. as part of the ancient ceremony of Yumi-Hajime.

Admission is free. Street parking is plentiful from midnight to 9 a.m., and between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. there is parking at Damien School with a free shuttle.

'THREE KINGS' CELEBRATION SET

The 32nd annual "Dia de los Tres Reyes" (The Three Kings Day Celebration), the traditional Latin American Christmas event, will be presented by the United Puerto Rican Association of Hawaii Inc. beginning with the noon Mass Jan. 8 at St. John the Baptist Church, 2324 Omilo Lane.

In Puerto Rico, children wake up to find their shoes stuffed with and surrounded by presents, in memory of the gifts brought to the baby Jesus by the wise men.

After the Spanish-language Mass, the Fiesta continues 1:30 to 6 p.m. at the United Puerto Rican Association of Hawaii social hall, 1249 N. School St., with Spanish choral group, a nativity skit by keiki, gifts for the children given by the Three Kings, Puerto Rican luncheon, music by El Conjunto Tropical, El Mariachi Loco, Son Caribe and Wally Rita; $5 (free for children 10 and younger).

LINGLE TO HELP LIGHT MENORAH

Chabad of Hawaii will hold its 19th annual Hanukkah public menorah lighting on Sunday with the building of a 10-foot Lego menorah, Jewish music, hot latkes, chocolate gelt and special guest Gov. Linda Lingle.

The menorah building begins at 5 p.m. with lighting at 6:30.

Chabad also will hold its annual bash for 6:30 p.m. Wedneday at the Ala Moana Hotel; $20 ($12 ages 2-12), with family, military and student discounts.
