South Maui beaches reopen

KIHEI, Maui — All South Maui beaches were reopened at 7:30 a.m. yesterday following two days of shark sightings.

On Wednesday, a swimmer was attacked by a tiger shark off Keawakapu Beach.

Jonathan Genant, 29, of San Diego lost the pinkie finger on his left hand and part of his ring finger in the attack. A 10- to 12-foot tiger shark was spotted in the area.

Thursday, a Maui Fire Department helicopter spotted an 8-foot tiger shark about 200 yards off Kama'ole Beach Park II, prompting officials to close several popular beaches.

No sharks were spotted during yesterday's check of nearshore waters.

FIRE DAMAGES BIG ISLAND HOME

HILO, Hawai'i — Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire in Orchidland Estates in Puna early yesterday that did an estimated $70,000 damage.

Fire officials said the single-family home at 16-1623 36th Ave. was collapsing in flames when firefighters reached the scene at about 3:55 a.m.

No one was home, and there were no injuries.
