Rogelio "Jun" Hernandez, who served as the assistant coach for the University of California men's tennis team the past 3 1/2 seasons, has been named women's head coach at the University of Hawai'i, the school announced in a press release yesterday.
Hernandez succeeds Carolyn Katayama, who coached the Rainbow Wahine from 1999 to 2005.
While an assistant at Cal, Hernandez helped the Golden Bears achieve the No. 4 national ranking at the conclusion of the 2002-03 season. He also was Cal's assistant women's coach for three seasons, earning the International Tennis Association's Women's Assistant Coach of the Year award for the Northwest Region in 2002.
Hernandez, who takes over the UH program Wednesday, has spent summers as a hitting coach for professionals Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova and Conchita Martinez.
The 1995 San Diego State graduate played No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Aztecs. In 1996, he was a finalist at the USTA National Men's 25 Hardcourt Singles tournament and ranked No. 3 in the USTA's Southern California Section rankings.
The Rainbow Wahine begin their spring season with a road trip to Northern California, Jan. 26 to 30. UH will face defending national champion Stanford on Jan. 26, followed by dual matches with San Jose State, San Francisco and Pacific.
