Lui leads BYU soccer into NCAAs

Six soccer players from Hawai'i are participating in the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament beginning Friday.
Brigham Young (15-2-3), with senior midfielder Charlene Lui (Punahou '02 of Honolulu), plays Weber State (14-4-1).
Duke (13-5-1), with sophomore goalkeeper Allison Lipsher (Punahou '04 of Hawai'i Kai), plays Fairfield (10-6-3).
UNLV (13-6-3), with senior midfielder Lori Sakai (Iolani '02), plays Cal State Fullerton (17-3-0)
Gonzaga (12-3-4), with freshman midfielder Dayna Omiya (Iolani '05 of Pearl City), plays Southern California (12-5-2).
Pepperdine (13-3-3), with freshman defender Kelsey Baker (Punahou '05 of Honolulu) and junior defender Ashlee Doi (Mililani '02), plays Mississippi (14-4-2).
MORE WOMEN'S SOCCER
Loo made the first team as a forward last season. She played in all 17 games this season, tallying a team-high 15 shots.
Otani started 17 matches, recording 23 shots, including 10 on goal.
MEN'S SOCCER
Santa Clara junior forward Keith DeVey (St. Anthony '02 of Kula) was named to the District VIII team, and Southern Methodist senior forward Duke Hashimoto (Iolani '02 of Kapolei) was named to the District VI team.
Both will advance to the national ballot to be considered for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced in mid-November.
FOOTBALL
Senior defensive tackle Vaka Manupuna (Saint Louis '01 of Kihei) also had six tackles.
Sophomore nose tackle Wilson Afoa (Saint Louis '03 of Honolulu) had five tackles, including one for a loss of five yards, and senior linebacker Joe Lobendahn (Saint Louis '01 of Honolulu) had three tackles.
His longest field goal was 46 yards, and he also has two tackles.
Sophomore defensive tackle Oren Long (Saint Louis '04 of Honolulu) has 14 tackles, including two sacks for a loss of 10 yards.
Freshman kick returner B.J. Batts (Saint Louis '04 of Kapolei) and freshman offensive lineman Bronson Carvalho (Saint Louis '04 of Kapa'a) are also on the team.
TENNIS
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Uli led the Cougars with 459 kills, averaging 4.3 kills per game. She also ranked in the top 5 on the team in digs (317), blocks (208) and aces (56).
Freshman outside hitter/middle Tanya Sale (Farrington '05 of Honolulu) was an honorable mention selection. She recorded 334 digs and 46 aces. Sale also racked up 310 kills, good for an average of 2.7 per game.
She tallied 33 digs and an ace in a 30-23, 30-23, 30-17 victory against Bethany University Oct. 29.
She was also named the California Pacific Conference's Libero of the Week.
Senior setter Kari Shimomura (McKinley '02 of Kaimuki) was named the CalPac Setter of the Week Nov. 2, after recording 28 assists, 15 digs, 10 kills and hitting .444 against Bethany.
Seven of Menlo's 10 players are from Hawai'i: Hewett, Shimomura, junior middle/outside hitter Sanoe Eselu (Moanalua '03 of Waipahu), sophomore defensive specialist/libero Krista Catian (Hanalani of Wai'anae), sophomore middle Courtney Adaro (Moanalua of Wahiawa), sophomore outside hitter Talia Onosai (Word of Life '04 of Kane'ohe) and junior outside hitter Ames Samuelu (of Honolulu).
SWIMMING
On the meet's first day: San Diego senior Ashley Swart (Kaiser '02 of Hawai'i Kai) won the 200 freestyle (1:51.70), 200 breaststroke (2:16.77) and 400 individual medley (4:20.66). UC Irvine sophomore Chelsea Nagata (Maui '04 of Kahului) won the 100 backstroke (57.02), 50 freestyle (23.77) and 100 butterfly (56.01). UC Irvine sophomore Randall Tom (Seabury Hall '04 of Wailuku) won the 200 butterfly (1:50.45) and 100 butterfly (49.26), and was third in the 400 individual medley (4:10.00). San Diego senior Ashley Rose (Kealakehe '02 of Kailua, Kona) finished ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.42), 10th in the 50 freestyle (25.77) and 12th in the 200 backstroke (2:18.86). Pepperdine senior Nicole Okuna (Waiakea) was seventh in the 100 butterfly (58.54), 18th in the 100 backstroke (1:05.53) and 19th in the 50 freestyle (26.03). San Diego sophomore Leoho'onani Reyes (Kamehameha of Kaunakakai) was 15th in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.37), 15th in the 200 breaststroke (2:47.67) and 25th in the 100 freestyle (1:00.31).
On the meet's second day: Swart won the 200 freestyle (1:51.65) and 200 breaststroke (2:17.44). Tom won the 200 individual medley (1:52.65). Rose placed fourth in the 50 freestyle (25.65) and third in the 200 backstroke (2:09.98). Okuna placed fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:14.26) and 11th in the 100 freestyle (56.02). Reyes was 14th in the 50 freestyle (27.35) and 17th in the 200 breaststroke (2:42.39).
CROSS COUNTRY
Anderson, who completed the 5K race in 18:29.7, was also named to the all-conference second team.
