Man, 41, charged in sex assault on boy

A Kaimuki man charged with sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy met the child at a computer gaming establishment, according to a criminal complaint filed in district court yesterday.

Christopher Brainerd, 41, was charged yesterday with five counts of third-degree sexual assault. Brainerd, who has a prior sexual assault conviction, was also charged with failing to update information in the Hawai'i sexual offender registry.

Brainerd assaulted the Kuhio Elementary School fifth-grader repeatedly between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31, police said.

On Oct. 28, the owner of the gaming establishment called Honolulu police saying that he saw Brainerd in his store two months earlier with a 10-year-old boy sitting on his lap, according to the complaint. The owner told Brainerd the behavior was inappropriate. Brainerd responded that he found nothing wrong with it, but agreed to stop.

On Oct. 28, the owner overheard one of the boy's friends say that the boy was at Brainerd's house. The owner called police, who immediately contacted the boy's father, according to the complaint.

On Nov. 4, police detectives who deal with sex crimes interviewed the boy, who told them Brainerd befriended him at the gaming establishment. The two would meet there, and Brainerd would buy him food and Yu-Gi-Oh game cards, according to the complaint.

Brainerd began taking the boy to his home, first on Makini Street and then on Kapahulu Avenue.

There the two would use the computer, watch TV and play Yu-Gi-Oh games.

During this period, from Aug. 1 to Oct. 31, Brainerd would inappropriately touch the boy, according to the complaint.

He was arrested Tuesday morning.

Bail was set at $50,000.
