Woman dies in Ka'u collision

A Hilo woman was killed yesterday after the car she was driving collided with another car on Highway 11 in Ka'u.
The woman, in her 20s, was reportedly driving south when she tried to pass a car in front of her, lost control of her vehicle and collided with a car heading north.
Hawai'i County firefighters responded to an 8:54 a.m. call just north of the 60-mile marker on Highway 11 and found the woman pinned in her car. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 34-year-old man, who was driving the northbound car, was taken to Ka'u Hospital after complaining of chest pains. He was later taken to the Hilo Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

CHILD INJURED IN FALL FROM WINDOW
A 1-year-old child was injured after falling from a second-story window of a Kalihi apartment yesterday, but was in stable condition, firefighters said.
The baby was playing with a group of children on mattresses stacked up against a window inside the apartment. The child tumbled out the window and landed in a stairwell, said Honolulu Fire Department Battalion Chief Tom Perkins.

BUS CRASH CLOSES H-1 LANES FOR HOUR
Two lanes of the eastbound H-1 Freeway were closed for at least an hour yesterday after a tour bus crashed into the center divider near the Punahou Street off-ramp.
The bus driver apparently suffered a heart attack, which may have caused the 3:42 p.m. accident, said Fire Battalion Chief Tom Perkins. Two people were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.
The bus driver was revived at the scene and also taken to a nearby hospital, Perkins said.
EAST HONOLULU
HIKER AIRLIFTED FROM KULI'OU'OU
A 55-year-old woman who fell and broke her leg on the Kuli'ou'ou Trail yesterday was lifted from the area by firefighter helicopter rescuers.
Helicopter rescuers responded to the injury, reported at 12:46 p.m., by depositing firefighters on the trail who stabilized the woman's leg before getting her out of the area about an hour later, said Fire Department Battalion Chief Tom Perkins. Rescuers reported that the trail was slippery, he said.
PEARL CITY
3 MEN SOUGHT IN ATTACK ON GUARD
Three men were being sought yesterday for attacking a caretaker of a Pearl City junkyard with a a pipelike instrument, police said.
The men entered the junkyard at 9 p.m. Saturday in a car. When the 54-year-old security guard, who lives on the property, went to investigate, he was struck about 20 times with the pipelike instrument, police said.
Police are looking for the men in connection with an investigation of attempted murder and second-degree burglary.
KAILUA
POLICE SEEK GROUP IN 'AIKAHI BRAWL
Police yesterday were looking for a group of people involved in an early-morning fight in Kailua during which a 17-year-old boy was hit in the mouth with a beer can, police said.
The teenager was "loitering" in the 'Aikahi Elementary School playground shortly after midnight yesterday when two groups of people pulled up in two cars, police said. A fight broke out between the boy and an undisclosed number of others, and the boy was hit in the mouth with a can, police said.
Police did not know the extent of the boy's injuries. A felony assault case was opened, police said.
MAUI
MOTORCYCLIST DIES IN HANA COLLISION
A motorcyclist was killed Saturday night on the Hana Highway after colliding with a pickup truck, authorities said.
The 36-year-old motorcyclist, whose name was not released by Maui police, was trying to overtake another car in a no-passing zone when an oncoming 1999 Nissan pickup truck driven by Thierry Dumesny, a 42-year-old Ha'iku resident, collided with the Yamaha motorcycle, Maui police said. The accident occurred at 7 p.m. near the Ho'okipa Park exit.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead by doctors at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Police are still investigating to determine if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision. The accident marks Maui's 12th traffic fatality this year, compared with 17 for the same period last year.
GUARD ARRESTED IN AIRPORT DISPUTE
A Pacific Wings employee complained to Maui police that he was harassed by a Kahului Maui Airport security officer yesterday morning, authorities said.
Police were called to the airport because an employee claimed that the security officer verbally threatened another employee of Pacific Wings. The employee was allegedly videotaping the security officers in the area. Police arrested security guard Eric Brown, 49, for investigation of terroristic threatening. He was released on bail.
This is the second incident at the Maui airport involving a security guard and Pacific Wings, which is a small interisland carrier. The first occurred last month when a retired Maui police officer who heads Wackenhut security at Kahului Airport allegedly attacked the head of Pacific Wings Airlines and an airline employee during a meeting to discuss a long-running dispute between the two companies.
