Honolulu police and fire rescue specialists today will resume the search along the Hau'ula Loop Trail for a 58-year-old Oregon woman who failed to return from a walk on Thanksgiving Day.
The missing woman, Barbara Whaley, is bipolar and suffers from ailments that include a heart condition and diabetes. She came here from Oregon with her daughter, grandchildren, son-in-law and his mother on Sept. 12 but had never walked the trail before Thanksgiving Day, police said.
Some of the 20 pills Whaley takes daily have been found along the trail, and a witness, who lives in the area, told police he saw her twice on Thanksgiving Day on the trail, once at about the one-quarter mile point and again 1 1/2 miles farther up, said officer Philip Camero of the police department's Missing Persons Unit.
Twenty fire rescue specialists assisted by HFD's helicopter yesterday searched the trail area for a third consecutive day, based on information from the witness and a cell phone call from Whaley to relatives on Thanksgiving Day telling them she was on the trail, Camero said.
"The trail is marked for novice hikers but it can be treacherous if you go off the trail," he said.
Yesterday's search was suspended at 5 p.m. HPD's canine unit will be involved in today's search, Camero said.
Kaua'i police, meanwhile, reported no new developments in the search for Daniel Marks, 24, of Portland, Ore. Marks has been missing since Nov. 9 when he checked out of the International Hostel in Kapa'a after an overnight stay.
Marks had airline tickets to fly to San Francisco on Nov. 16, and to Minnesota on Nov. 20, but didn't use them.
A sister and brother of the missing man, Susan Marks and Rob Marks, flew to Kaua'i on Thanksgiving to look for him. Police are also searching for Daniel Marks.
Marks is described as 5 feet 8 and 130 to 140 pounds, with dark brown hair and eyes.
