CRATER OVERNIGHTER — A Friends of Haleakala National Park three-night service trip is planned for Saturday through Oct. 11, with accommodations at Kapalaoa and Holua cabins. Work may include planting and caring for native plants, invasive species eradication, light cabin maintenance. Call (808) 248-7660.

KANAHA WILDLIFE REFUGE — Weekly volunteer work days at Maui's Kanaha Pond Wildlife Refuge, 7:30 a.m. Thursdays. Call (808) 572-6338.

KOKUA KALIHI VALLEY — Volunteers are needed Oct. 22 to help the Sierra Club clear a former nursery site being developed into a park in upper Kalihi Valley in preparation for creating hiking trails. Call Arlene Buchholz at 988-9806 or Gina Goodman at 638-7853.

MANOA FALLS TRAIL WORK — The Sierra Club needs volunteers Oct. 23 to move gravel onto the Manoa Falls Trail. Meet at 8 a.m. at Church of the Crossroads, 2510 Bingham St., to car pool. Work ends by 2 p.m., followed by refreshments. Contact Randy Ching at 942-0145 or oahurandy@yahoo.com.

POUHALA MARSH RESTORATION — The Hawai'i Nature Center is cleaning up and restoring the wetland habitat in Pearl Harbor. Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed and mangrove 8:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday. FOUNTAIN GRASS — Team up with Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, the Nature Conservancy, and the state Division of Forestry and Wildlife, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 15, to remove fountain grass in Ocean View, Ka'u. MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY — Join Haleakala National Park staff members, 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 15, as they transplant native plants in the greenhouse, collect and prepare native seeds, and clear invasive species from planting sites. After lunch, volunteers can learn to make tapa from plants found in the park. Meet at 8:45 a.m. at maintenance area at park headquarters. MAKIKI WAI HELPERS — The Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Hawai'i Nature Center are looking for help Oct. 22 to make trail improvements, remove weeds and place native plants along the Makiki trail, as part of the Makiki Wai (Watershed Awareness Initiative). Water, gloves and tools provided; bring long pants and long-sleeved shirt, shoes or boots, insect repellent and lunch.
