HPU, BYUH volleyball teams beat visiting Lee

Barbara Martin had 12 kills as NCAA Division II No. 3 Hawai'i Pacific swept NAIA Division I No. 20 Lee University, 30-18, 30-20, 30-24, yesterday in a non-conference volleyball match at St. Andrew's Priory gym.

Flavia Brakling added 11 kills and 10 digs, Antje Buskies had nine kills and Paula Koikopoulos contributed eight kills and six blocks for the Sea Warriors (18-1).

Bruna Langer had eight kills for the Lady Flames (17-6) of Cleveland, Tenn.

Earlier in the day, Brigham Young-Hawai'i rallied past Lee, 18-30, 21-30, 30-27, 30-16, 15-7.

Yu Chuan Weng had 27 kills and 13 digs, Noelle Filimoeatu added 19 kills and 13 digs, and LeeAnn Mapu contributed 57 assists for the Seasiders (14-3), ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division II.

Daisy Varbanova led Lee with 14 kills.

CROSS COUNTRY



HAWAI'I PACIFIC SWEEPS

Inga Burger and Jacob Klausen won individual titles as the Hawai'i Pacific women's and men's cross country teams won Pacific West Conference championships yesterday at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Burger finished the women's 5-kilometer race in 16 minutes, 4 seconds to edge teammate Louise Brasen (16:16). BYU-Hawai'i's Jennifer Puzey was third in 16:22.

HPU scored a low-best 25 points to outdistance BYUH (39). Hawai'i-Hilo (70) was third and Chaminade (99) fourth.

Klausen won the men's 8K in 23:01, with Chaminade's Jeff Lim finishing second in 23:22 and HPU's Casper Dahl third in 23:26.

HPU scored 41 points to hold off BYUH (46), with Hilo (52) and Chaminade (82) completing the field.

SWIMMING AND DIVING



UH TOPS ARIZONA STATE

Melanie Schlanger, Nicole Mackey, Bache' Atkins and QiongJie Huang each won two events as the University of Hawai'i women's swimming and diving team opened the season Friday night with a 136-106 victory over Arizona State at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Schlanger won the 50 free (23.22 seconds) and 100 free (50.25), Mackey won the 400 individual medley (4:18.99) and 200 back (1:59.03) and Atkins won the 200 free (1:50.80) and 500 free (4:56.74).

Huang, the reigning NCAA 1-meter diving champion, won the 1-meter (305.25 points) and 3-meter (330.55) events.


TENNIS

UH'S SCEATS OUSTED

Ninth-seeded Tyler Browne of California defeated Hawai'i's Ryan Sceats, 6-1, 6-2, yesterday in the round of 32 main draw of the Wilson/ITA North Western Region Championships in Santa Clara, Calif.

Sceats and fellow senior Jarrod Diepraam beat Nevada's Eldar Dzhafarov and Guillaume Tonelli, 8-3, to reach today's main draw round of 16. They will play the third-seeded team of Marcus Schiller and Arron Spencer of Oregon.

Sceats and Diepraam are the only UH players remaining in the main draw as two other doubles teams — Chad Faulk and Bryon Weinberg, and Brent Hunter and Yasuo Sakurai — lost in the round of 32 yesterday.


SAILING

UH SAILOR TRIUMPHS

University of Hawai'i sophomore Tinja Anderson-Mitterling won the Women's Single-handed Pacific Coast Championships Friday in Honolulu.

Anderson-Mitterling and Stanford's Evan Brown both scored a low-best 27 points, but Anderson-Mitterling earned the tiebreaker after winning four of the 10 races.

The victory earned Anderson-Mitterling a berth in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association national championships.

UH junior Shandy Buckley won a race and finished fourth with 47 points.


GOLF

THOMAS, SOUZA LEAD

Joseph Thomas and Chris Souza each shot a 4-over-par 76 yesterday to share the first-round lead of the Amatour Hawai'i Kapolei Challenge at the Kapolei Golf Course.

Blaine Kimura, Michael Miguel, Mohammad Ali and David Maddox share third place at 78.
