WAIALUA — Kalaheo and Waialua literally flipped out last night.

Moments after Waialua's 21-7 win against Kaiser at newly named Toshiyuki "Toshi" Nakasone Football Field, the Cougars came out on top in coin toss to take the fourth and final berth in next week's O'ahu Interscholastic Association White playoffs.

A stunned homecoming crowd cheered loudly after time ran out against the Cougars, only to be silenced when they heard the result of the coin toss.

Waialua's win and Kalaheo's 20-14 victory over Waipahu at Kailua created a tie with Kaiser, Kalaheo and Waialua at 3-4.

Since each team had beaten one but not the other, the tiebreaker was a coin toss, which took place between the Kaiser and Waialua athletic directors and OIA executive secretary Dwight Toyama representing Kalaheo. Each representative flipped a coin and the odd person was in.

The Kaiser buses had departed not knowing the decision.

"It feels really bad," said a dejected Waialua receiver Edwin Rubio, who scored all three Bulldog touchdowns.

Kaiser will play top-seeded Moanalua and Radford will play at Campbell in next week's playoff openers.

The Cougars, trailing 6-0 at halftime, opened the second half with a score. Pa'a Kamauoha's 38-yard kickoff return to the Waialua 43 set up Nick Yuzawa's 33-yard TD pass to Isaac Saffery with Kyle Niiro's PAT giving Kaiser a 7-6 lead.

But the Bulldogs got two fourth-quarter TDs. A nine-play, 95-yard drive was capped with an 11-yard TD pass from Caleb Fore to Rubio. Fore hit Alvin Foster for the 2-point conversion to make it 14-7. Later, Rubio's 28-yard punt return to the Kaiser 25 set up his 15-yard TD run with 3:11 left in the game.

Kaiser got the ball back twice, but lost the first series on a fumble and the second on downs.

The Bulldogs got the first half's only score on Rubio's 10-yard end-around early in the second quarter. The extra-point kick failed.

NOTES

Prior to the game, Waialua's football stadium was re-named Toshiyuki "Toshi" Nakasone Football Field in honor of the former Bulldog coach. "This was totally unexpected. I'm surprised," said Nakasone, 85. "I'm glad this was done when all of my players were (present)." Nakasone coached Waialua from 1949 to 1958, compiling a 51-48-4 record. He led the team to Rural O'ahu Interscholastic Association titles from 1952-55. "He treated the players with dignity and class," said Roy Mutobe, who played from 1954 to 1956. "I'm glad I crossed paths with him. he taught me a lot."
