MILILANI — In a stunning turn of events, Farrington rallied for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to upset Mililani, 20-19, last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red quarterfinal at the Trojans' Stadium.

Elijah Filifili hit tight end Tanner Fetui on a slant over the middle for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 2:52 left to tie the score at 19. Larry Siuta, who missed his first PAT of the game, converted for the difference.

"It's just a wonderful feeling," Filifili said. "Coaches told me to stay in the game and play with heart, so we did and we came out with the victory."

"We told the kids, 'just believe,' " Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "We prepared them for this situation. They pulled it out. I give them credit."

The Governors (5-5), who finished fourth in the East, will play the winner of tonight's Kapolei at Kahuku game in next week's semifinal.

The West champion Trojans (6-3), who were ranked eighth in The Advertiser Top 10, are done for the season.

"I think we exceeded a lot of expectations," Mililani coach James Millwood said. "We're a very young team. We have inexperienced quarterbacks, our offensive line are all brand new guys. I think we kind of overachieved and they believed in how to play. I think we could have gone further, but the Farrington team came to play tonight."

The Trojans took a 10-6 lead into the second half, and after a scoreless third quarter, they jumped on the Governors for two quick scores in the fourth quarter.

A fumble by Filifili was returned 42 yards by Mililani defensive lineman Daniel Griffin to the Governors' 5. Running back Kekoa Perbera scored on first down to make it 16-6. The PAT missed.

The Trojans then recovered an onside kick at the Farrington 43, eventually leading to a 26-yard field goal by Michael Smith that made it 19-6 with 6:29 to play.

A touchback on the ensuing kickoff put Farrington at its own 20, but the Governors needed only two plays to score. After a 36-yard run by Hercules Sula, Filifili threw a short pass to Elijah Lesu, who dodged his way to a 44-yard TD with 5:46 left. Siuta's PAT made it 19-13.

It looked like the Trojans were going to neutralize that score when Jordan Torres returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to the Farrington 5. But on first down, quarterback John Abreu's handoff to the running back dropped to the ground and Fetui, a defensive lineman, recovered at the 9 with 5:24 left.

"The hole was there, too," Millwood said. "We didn't get the ball there (on the exchange). We preached all year long that in the red zone we can't turn over the ball."

Farrington methodically moved down field, but it had a scary moment when Filifili hit Maeli Siliga on a pass that apparently was supposed to be a hook-and-lateral. The ball fell loose but Siliga recovered at the Trojans' 12 for a 13-yard gain that set up the go-ahead TD pass to Fetui.

The Trojans had a final chance after Farrington scored, but defensive lineman Taua Olomua had a sack and batted down a pass on fourth-and-7 at the Mililani 21 to end Mililani's hopes of a comeback.

Both teams caught each other by surprise in the first half, using the long ball to score.

The Governors wasted little time when Filifili hit a wide-open Lesu on a 70-yard TD pass on the second play of the game to give Farrington a 6-0 lead just 1:04 into the game.

The Trojans struck back in the second quarter when Abreu, on play-action, found wideout Smith all alone on the right sideline to complete an 88-yard pass. Colin Lund's PAT made it 7-6 with 6:18 left in the half.

Just before the half, Smith booted a 37-yard field goal to give the Trojans a 10-6 lead.
