KAPOLEI — Quarterback Brad Padayao overcame some early-game jitters then picked apart 'Aiea in leading Kapolei to a 41-13 win in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West football last night at the Hurricanes' new stadium.

Padayao passed for four touchdowns and ran a textbook option in which he ran for another score for the Hurricanes (3-1 overall, 2-0 West). Na Ali'i dropped to 2-1 and 0-1.

"I had to get the jitters out," Padayao said of his slow start when he was intercepted twice in the first quarter. "Thankfully, our defense pulled us up."

'Aiea took a 6-0 lead when Lofa Liilii's 46-yard punt return to the Kapolei 6 set up a 6-yard TD pass from Kali Kuia to Josh Blakemore.

Kapolei got on the board in the second quarter, moving 88 yards before Padayao scored on an option keeper to the right from 2 yards out. The PAT gave Kapolei a 7-6 lead.

But Kapolei's defense rose, getting a fumble inside 'Aiea territory to set up a 17-yard TD run by slotback Aaron Santiago after taking a pitch from Padayao. Later, an interception by Kalae Parish set up a 2-yard TD pass from Padayao to Jon Santiago to make it 20-6 at the half.

'Aiea pulled to 20-13 in the third quarter when Kuia hit Alan Fonoti on a 38-yard pass. But Kapolei stormed for three TD passes in the fourth quarter. Padayao hit Caleb Spencer for a 57-yarder, Sean Sasser for a 34-yarder and Alasi Toilolo on a 6-yarder to round out the scoring.

Although it was a good win for Kapolei, coach Darren Hernandez said his team still isn't where it should be, telling his players, "We're not hurricanes yet. We're still a tropical depression."

"There's some encouraging signs, but we definitely have to get better in a lot of areas," Hernandez said. "We were pretty sloppy at times. We didn't play as well as we were capable of."

'Aiea, though, could not capitalize on Padayao's two early interceptions, losing the ball once on a fumble and having to punt.

"We had our opportunities," 'Aiea coach Wendell Say said. "They capitalized on their opportunities and scored. We couldn't capitalize on ours. We come into the red zone (inside the opponents' 20-yard line) four, five times and we can't punch it in."

Kapolei has a crucial division matchup next week when it hosts Leilehua. 'Aiea will host Wai'anae.
