Planos ousted in U.S. event

Kapalua's Lori Planos was eliminated in the round of 32 of the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championships yesterday in Richmond, Texas.

Corey Weworski, of Carlsbad, Calif. beat Planos on the 19th hole of match play at the Shadow Hawk Golf Club.

Planos parred the 18th hole to tie the match, but bogeyed the first extra hole.

Planos won her first match Monday, defeating Sydney Moore, of Menominee, Mich., 4 and 2.

SENIORS GAIN NATIONALS

Six U.S. Tennis Association/Hawai'i Pacific Section teams advanced to the national championships of the largest adult recreational tennis league in the world by winning the USA League Super Senior Sectional Championships last weekend at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

More than 200 players ages 60 and older, from 22 teams, competed at Hawai'i's inaugural Super Senior Sectionals. The teams, which represent clubs, parks and organizations, finished at the top of their local leagues before advancing to sectionals.

Nationals will be in Palm Springs, Calif., with the 6.0 and 7.0 divisions playing Oct. 17 to 19 and 8.0 going Oct. 24 to 26.

More than 550,000 players are in the USA League Tennis program. They are grouped into six ability levels, ranging from beginner (2.5) to advanced (5.0), based on the National Tennis Rating Program. Doubles teams combine players' NTRP Ratings.

Winning teams are:

6.0 Women—Na Hinahina (Wailuku); 6.0 Men—McCully Ducks (Honolulu); 7.0 Women—Maui Magic (Wailuku). 7.0 Men—Cataract and Vision Center of Hawai'i (Honolulu). 8.0 Women—Luahine (Honolulu). 8.0 Men—Team Mililani.
