East-West Center fundraiser with jazz, slack-key, food, fun

It’s a busy weekend at the East-West Center:
• “Operation Ohana: Oceans Apart, United by Heart” is the title of a fundraiser for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Presented by students of the East-West Center, it features music and dance, activities and games for the family, lei-making, a silent auction and food. The University of Hawaiçi Jazz Band and Grammy-winning slack-key guitarist Jeff Peterson will perform.
Hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the EWC Friendship Circle, between John Burns Hall and the Hale Mänoa dormitory. Admission is free. 944-7359.
• It’s not too late to join in a bon dance: All are invited to a celebration from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at the EWC Friendship Circle, where students from 49 countries who are studying at the EWC are expected to participate, led by the venerable Honolulu Fukushima Bon Dance Club.
The bon dance is presented in conjunction with the exhibit “Japanese Temple Architecture in Hawaii,” in the EWC Gallery in Burns Hall through Oct. 14. Special EWC Gallery hours tomorrow are noon to 6 p.m.
