Baldwin alum 63rd at LPGA qualifying

Baldwin graduate Shayna Miyajima finished in a tie for 63rd yesterday at the LPGA Tour Sectional Qualifying Tournament. She failed to advance to final qualifying.
Miyajima closed with a 2-over-par 74 for a four-day total of 9-over 297.
The tournament was played at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Golfers switched between the Arnold Palmer and Dinah Shore courses the first two days, then played the Palmer course after the cut.
The second sectional qualifying is Oct. 4 to 7 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla.
The top 30 finishers and ties from the Florida qualifier will join the 32 who advanced yesterday, current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2005 Futures Tour money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament in Florida Nov. 30 to Dec. 4.
Brittany Lang (67-276) earned medalist honors yesterday by a shot over Japanese star Ai Miyazato (69-277). Lang won six collegiate tournaments in her two years at Duke and also tied for second at this year's U.S. Women's Open.
The low round of the day came from U.S. Women's Amateur champion Morgan Pressel, who surged onto the leaderboard with a 9-under 63 to finish in sixth, at 280.
HIGASHIYAMA IN LEAD
Troy Higashiyama shot a first-round 68 and was four strokes ahead of a trio of golfers at the Barbers Point Invitational yesterday at Barbers Point Golf Course.
Blaine Kimura, Spencer Shishido and Darryl Wassum are tied for second at 72.
Four more golfers are at 73, including Moanalua High School freshman Tadd Fujikawa, multiple Manoa Cup champion Brandan Kop and defending champion Mark Chun.
Play continues today at 7 a.m. The tournament concludes tomorrow.
HAWAI'I-HILO SIXTH
The Hawai'i-Hilo men's golf team shot a 601 yesterday and is in sixth place after the first day of St. Martin's Invitational at Lacey, Wash.
St. Martin's leads the nine-team tournament with a 582.
Kevin Shimomura is Hilo's top golfer with a 147.
Shane Prante of St. Martin's leads with a 133.
WATER POLO
BYUH ROLLS TO WIN
James Jacobson, Trent Johnson and Stu Johnson each scored three goals yesterday to lead 17th-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 19-3 victory over LaVerne (Calif.) on the first day of the BYU-Hawai'i Water Polo Tournament in La'ie.

BYUH BEATS HPU
Yu Chuan Weng had 20 kills and Lilly Tufaga added 12 as Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept No. 25 Chaminade, 30-18, 30-20, 30-27, last night at Cannon Activities Center.
LeeAnn Mapu had 41 assists for the Seasiders, who improved to 11-0.
Trina Kauliakamoa had 12 kills and Marijana Stanic added 10 for Chaminade, which dropped to 8-4.
The Seasiders out-hit the Silverswords .291-to-.090.
BYU-Hawai'i will host Chaminade tonight at 7:30.
