Irons reaches quarterfinals in Australia

Kaua'i's Andy Irons was the only Hawai'i surfer to advance to the quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro yesterday.
The fourth round was completed in 3- to 5-foot waves at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia.
Irons, a three-time former world champion, defeated California's Bobby Martinez, 12.5-10.5. Irons trailed for the first 20 minutes of the heat, but then took control with a 5.27 ride with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Fellow Hawai'i surfers Bruce Irons and Pancho Sullivan were eliminated yesterday.
Australian Bede Durbidge edged Bruce Irons, 14.9-14.56.
Sullivan was eliminated by Australia's Luke Stedman, 12.6-11.34.
Current world champion Kelly Slater of Florida advanced to the quarterfinals with a 17.10-15.27 victory over California's Taylor Knox.
The contest is the second stop on the 2006 World Championship Tour.
BASEBALL
HILO COMES UP SHORT
Texas-Arlington scored four runs in the first and two in the second, then held off visiting Hawai'i-Hilo, 6-3, yesterday in a non-conference game at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Hilo right-hander Ryan Olszewski, who gave up six of the eight hits he allowed in the first two innings, faced just one batter over the minimum his final six innings. He struck out three and walked two.
Jimmy Crider, Mark Veneri, Matt Haasenritter and A.J. Satele each had two hits for the Vulcans (15-30), who outhit Texas-Arlington (17-22), 11-8.
Hilo scored a run in the ninth and had the bases loaded before a strikeout ended the game.
GOLF
KONO TIES FOR FOURTH
Honolulu's Stephanie Kono shot a final-round even-par 71 Sunday to finish in a tie for fourth at the Heather Farr Classic in Mesa, Ariz.
Kono, who shot 78 and 68 in the first two rounds, finished with a 4-over 217 total in the American Junior Golf Association tournament at the Longbow Golf Club.
Kimberly Kim, who moved to California from the Big Island in February, finished 11th with 68—221 while her older sister, Christina, tied for 20th with 77—228.
Honolulu's Tadd Fujikawa tied for 45th in the boys division with 78—224.
SOFTBALL
UH SWEEPS CU
Tyleen Tausaga had five RBIs, Tanisha Milca drove in four runs and both homered to help host University of Hawai'i beat Chaminade, 17-0, last night to complete a sweep of a doubleheader scrimmage.
Kate Robinson homered and Justine Smethurst and Paula Blanning teamed on a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts as UH won the first game, 8-1.
Meanwhile, UH announced it has signed Moanalua High senior Traci Yoshikawa to play next season.
Yoshikawa, who played shortstop and catcher for 'Na Menehune, was named to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association East first team and was an All-State honorable-mention pick.
BASKETBALL
UH CAMP IN JUNE
The University of Hawai'i men's basketball coaching staff and players will be instructing campers 5 years old through 17 on skills and techniques at the UH Boys & Girls Basketball Camp.
Sessions will be held June 9 to 11 and June 12 to 14. All camp sessions are conducted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the cost is $150 per session (per child).
Applications must be completed by May 19 and payment should be sent to:

FOOTBALL
NFL JUNIORS IN JUNE
An NFL Junior Player Development camp will be held June 12 to 17 at Moanalua High.
The full-contact, full-gear camp is open to youngsters ages 12 to 14. There is no weight limit. The camp is free.
The camp is limited to the first 150 who turn in their completed forms by June 8. The forms include a physical waiver from a doctor, a consent form signed by either parents or guardians, and a birth certificate for proof of age.
Forms can be picked up at Moanalua High's main office or can be downloaded from 'Na Menehune's Web site at www.moanaluafootball.com.
Camp times are 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. June 12 to 16, and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on June 17.
