Hayashi's opening 67 tops Mid-Pacific Open

Kevin Hayashi, seeking his first Mid-Pacific Open championship, fired a 5-under-par 67 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round at the Mid-Pacific Country Club in Lanikai.
Hayashi, a teaching pro at Mauna Kea Resort, finished second last year, one shot behind winner John Lynch, who opened defense of his title with a 78.
Pro Chad Saladin was second with a 68, followed by pros Casey Nakama (69), Jerry Mullen (71), Leland Lindsay (71) and amateur Chan Kim (71), the only players to break par yesterday.
Two-time champion David Ishii, who holds the tournament record at 17-under 271 set in 1986, teed it up in the tournament for the first time since 1990. Playing for the first time in the senior flight, he shot even-par 72 for a three-stroke lead over Ronald Kiaaina, Daniel Nishimoto and Larry Stubblefield.
The cut for the final two rounds in all flights — pro, championship, A and B — will be made after today's second round.

EVENTS SET FOR WAR MEMORIAL, BLAISDELL
War Memorial Stadium will be the site of Hawai'i's first Professional Bull Riders event, the Myron Duarte Maui Challenge, Nov. 10 and 11.
The Cheeseburger Island Style PBR Hawai'i All Star Challenge will follow on Nov. 17 and 18 at the Blaisdell Arena on O'ahu.
The PBR announced the events last month on Maui. The Maui event — named after bull-riding veteran and Maui native Myron Duarte — will offer $50,000 in prize money. The O'ahu event has $80,000 in prize money and will feature the top 20 PBR money earners and five riders to be chosen by fan vote.

UHH'S SERIES OPENER IN DALLAS RAINED OUT
Yesterday's University of Hawai'i-Hilo's series-opening game with Dallas Baptist University in Dallas was postponed because of bad weather.
The game was rescheduled for today as part of a doubleheader.

HAWAI'I PACIFIC SWEEPS 'SWORDS, GOES TO 24-17
Courtney Kessell pitched a two-hitter with no walks and 13 strikeouts and Krystal Plunkett hit a grand slam in the sixth as Hawai'i Pacific beat Chaminade, 7-2, last night to sweep a doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
In the first game, Dayna Berry went the distance and Kara Wedemeyer drove in a pair of runs to lift the Sea Warriors, 8-3.
HPU is 24-17; Chaminade is 10-29.
MILILANI'S SUGIHARA SIGNS WITH HPU
Mililani infielder Casey Sugihara has signed a letter of intent to attend Hawai'i Pacific University, it was announced yesterday by co-head softball coach Howard Okita.
Sugihara, a second baseman, is the first recruit to sign with HPU this spring. She hit .565 this past season and was selected first-team All-State by The Honolulu Advertiser, and was voted the team MVP.
"Casey is a player who will come in and compete for a starting job right away," Okita said. "She has great speed and can hit to all fields. Academically she is the type of student-athlete we want at HPU."

UH WOMEN OUSTED FROM WAC TOURNEY
Top-seeded Fresno State defeated the University of Hawai'i, 4-0, yesterday, eliminating the Rainbow Wahine from the Western Athletic Conference women's championship at Boise, Idaho.
The four-time defending WAC champion Bulldogs, ranked 23rd nationally, advanced to the semifinals and will play fourth-seeded Nevada, which beat fifth-seeded Idaho, 4-0.
The Rainbow Wahine, who beat Louisiana Tech, 4-0, in yesterday morning's play-in match, finished the season 4-17-1.

UH'S HUANG THIRD IN U.S. 1-METER EVENT
The University of Hawai'i's Qiongjie Huang finished third in the 1-meter springboard event yesterday at the U.S. Open diving championships at Indianapolis.
Kelci Bryant, of Indianapolis, took the lead on the third of her five dives and held off Christina Loukas.
Bryant, 17, finished with 271.00 points, while Loukas, the Big Ten champion in the 1-meter from Indiana University, had 267.25. Huang finished with 266.60.

PUNAHOU BEATS MPI IN ILH DIVISION I, 45-29
Shawna-Lei Kuehu scored 20 points and Chelsea Deptula added 15, leading Punahou to a 45-29 victory over Mid-Pacific last night in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I game at MPI gym.
The Buffanblu, who led 19-14 at halftime and 32-19 after three quarters, moved into a tie for first place with Iolani at 5-1.

MEDCALF'S 37 LEADS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
Ashley Medcalf scored 37 points to lead visiting Christian Academy to a 55-53 victory over Iolani last night in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II game.
Elise Asato hit five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points for the Raiders.
