The slogan for animated Adult Swim could be: That's not all, folks!
With continuing strong ratings among young men, a to-die-for demographic with advertisers, the Cartoon Network's late-night spinoff is exploring new territory in scheduling, programming and, it hopes, in audience. Recent and upcoming expansions include:
"We would see more of a bump in ratings if we could attract more women," program chief Mike Lazzo says. "Guys just tend to like stupid a little more."
To that end, Adult Swim will go where no behind has gone before with "Assy McGee," a series (in December) about a sharpshooting cop whose face takes the concept of a cleft chin to its anatomical extreme.
Other upcoming series include "Death Clock Metalocalypse" (May), following a heavy-metal band's path of destruction, and "Frisky Dingo" (September), with a villain who gets caught up in the pesky, fine-print details of world destruction.
Adult Swim, which has benefited greatly from reruns of "Family Guy" and "Futurama," also plans new seasons of many of its offbeat, 15-minute favorites, including "Robot Chicken"; "Tom Goes to the Mayor"; "Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law"; "The Venture Bros."; "12 oz. Mouse"; and "Squidbillies." Adult Swim also airs Japanese anime action series.
