Paddling season gets go-ahead

The summer regatta season for canoe paddlers will remain on schedule.
Officials from O'ahu's two canoe-paddling organizations were told by state and city officials in a meeting last night that the regatta season can commence next month as long as ocean conditions remain safe.
"The 2006 regatta season is on as planned," said Hannie Anderson, president of the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association. "We have received assurances from the (State and City) officials that they will cooperate with the paddlers to make this work."
The meeting was held because of concern over contaminated ocean conditions after heavy rain and runoff last month, as well as the diversion of 48 million gallons of untreated sewage into the Ala Wai Canal in late March.
The regatta season is scheduled to start May 28 at Ke'ehi Lagoon. There are more than 3,000 paddlers in O'ahu's two organizations — OHCRA and the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a.
Anderson said Ke'ehi Lagoon has been cleared for participation.
The Ala Wai Canal remains closed, and the 10 clubs that were forced out of the area to find new practice sites will remain in limbo.
"The Ala Wai situation remains the same and we just have to wait and see what happens with that," Anderson said.

IOLANI BEATS PAC-FIVE
Left-hander Wally Marciel pitched a two-hitter and Case Miyahira hit a three-run homer to lift host Iolani to a 7-1 Interscholastic League of Honolulu victory over Pac-Five yesterday.
Iolani is 10-2 and has a half-game lead over second place Punahou (9-2). Pac-Five is 5-7.
Marciel struck out eight. He also hit a bases-empty home run in the sixth inning.

KAMEHAMEHA 7, MID PACIFIC 6: The Warriors scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Ed Dun walked, then Stuart Kam singled to left-center. On the play, Dun tried to score, but fell and tried to go back to third. The catcher got the ball on the relay but fell and then threw it wild to third, allowing Dun to score.

DIVING
HUANG FINISHES THIRD
Former University of Hawai'i diver QiongJie Huang finished third in the 3-meter springboard Sunday in the U.S. Open Championships at Indianapolis.
Kelci Bryant of Chatham, Ill., won with 335.55 points. Huang, who led after the semifinals, finished with 288.45 points.
Aleia Monden, a St. Andrew's Priory senior, finished 16th in the semifinals with 213.75 points. The top 12 advanced to the final. It was her first major senior meet.
