Seniors Kevin Shimomura and Colin Gilliam lead University of Hawai'i-Hilo into the NCAA Division II Golf super regional this weekend. The tournament, which brings together the top teams from the West and Northwest regions, will be Saturday to Monday at the Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix.
Hilo finished fifth nationally last year. The top six from this regional qualify for nationals, May 16 to 19 at Glade Springs Resort in West Virginia.
Shimomura, from Lahaina, and Gilliam, from Canada, lead the Vulcans with scoring averages of 73 over 24 competitive rounds. Their teammates on the travel squad are junior Zachary Jones and freshmen Steven Zane and Drew Surmeier.
Shimomura will graduate in the fall and Gilliam next spring.
MAY BRINGS CHANCE TO TAKE FREE LESSON
May is the ninth annual Play Golf America PGA Free Lesson Month. Golfers can get a free, 10-minute lesson from a professional in their area. The growth-of-the-game initiative was organized by The PGA of America, Golf Digest, The Golf Channel and Golf For Women. Nike Golf is the sponsor.
The program is designed to reach new golfers and help existing golfers with their game. Last year, more than 122,000 lessons were given to amateurs.
To make an appointment, go to aloha.pga.com or call the Aloha Section PGA (593-2230) to find a professional at a convenient site.
IOLANI SENIORS COMMIT TO COLLEGE PROGRAMS
Iolani seniors Spencer Shishido and Shunsuke Aonuma will golf for Sonoma State and Dartmouth next fall.
Shishido, who won the Barbers Point Invitational last year, signed a letter of intent with Sonoma, currently ranked 16th in NCAA Division II. Aonuma committed to the golf program at Dartmouth, an Ivy League school that does not grant athletic scholarships.
NOTES
The third annual Bash 'N Scramble Employee Tournament at Ka'anapali Golf Courses raised $4,208 for the Lahainaluna High School athletic department. Money will be used for new equipment and to help cover travel expenses. Plans are under way for the fourth Bash 'N Scramble tournament, scheduled Dec. 2.
This year's Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association State Tournament is Aug. 2-3 on Maui. First round is a noon shotgun start at Kahili Golf Course (formerly Sandalwood). The final round is an 8 a.m. shotgun start at Elliair. More information and an application form are available at hswga.org. The Maui Invitational is that weekend, Aug. 5-6.
