Bridge reopened to light traffic

Cars and pickup trucks last night were allowed to resume driving on a wooden bridge in Makaha, five days after it was damaged by fire.
The bridge was reopened to light vehicles and pedestrians at about 7 p.m., said Scott Ishikawa, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.
However, vehicles of more than 12,000 pounds will need to continue using a detour through Makaha Valley Road, onto Huipu Drive, then onto Kili Drive and back onto Farrington Highway. DOT officials said the foundation of the bridge needs to be reinforced before heavy vehicles can use it.

SEWER BYPASS MAIN COMPLETED
City contractors have completed a sewer bypass line designed to prevent a repeat of the large sewage spill that fouled waters off Waikiki in March.
Running from the Ala Wai Canal to Ala Moana Beach Park, the 5,000-foot line will divert sewage to the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.
"If that aging sewer line in Waikiki breaks again, we won't face the scenario we had in March, when we had no choice but to divert wastewater into the Ala Wai Canal," Mayor Mufi Hannemann said yesterday.

CABBIE SHOOTER REMAINS AT LARGE
Police yesterday were trying to determine who owns the gun used in the shooting of a cab driver Friday night and were collecting evidence from the taxi van that was stolen by the shooter in Pearlridge and abandoned on the Kane'ohe side of Likelike Highway.
Lt. Ray Quon, head of Honolulu Police Department robbery investigations, said the shooter was still at large yesterday.
Yu Kyu Kim, 52, who was recovering at The Queen's Medical Center from a gunshot wound in the neck, spoke briefly with police on Monday, Quon said.
"We're developing leads, and it's a matter of just running them down now," said Quon, who asks that anyone with information about the case call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cell phone.
Police investigated the van yesterday for evidence such as fingerprints while investigators were awaiting information on the gun, which was registered but not to Kim.

SUSPECT FACES ROBBERY CHARGES
A 42-year-old man faces robbery charges after police said he pointed a gun at two Ala Moana Center security officers during a failed shoplifting attempt last night.
The man had taken merchandise from a store at the center and was confronted by two security officers about 7:10 p.m., police said. The man got into a fight with one of the officers and ran to a parked car, where police said the man retrieved a handgun.
Police said the man pointed the gun at the security officers, got into his car and drove off. The man was spotted about a mile away in Iwilei and was arrested without incident.
The man was in custody last night and faced charges of first- and second-degree robbery, said Detective Paul Nagata.
