TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005), 5 p.m., HBO. There was no reason for "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" to be remade. That 1971 delight did a wonderful job with Roald Dahl's tale of childhood whimsy and greed. Still, this new version did it even better. It reminded us that director Tim Burton, composer Danny Elfman and actor Johnny Depp are consummate talents. They captured the visual and emotional magic of this trip inside a candy factory. They also found the dark side of excess. The result is a classic for people of any age.
"Crossing Jordan," 9 p.m., NBC. Jordan finds a dead man with his 13-year-old daughter standing over him holding a gun. At first, she doubts the girl's claim of innocence. As new things happen, however, she begins to wonder. This stirs the emotions of Jordan, who was young when her mother was killed.
