One in, one out for Hawai'i golfers at the 106th U.S. Women's Amateur.

Kimberly Kim, a former Big Island resident now living in Arizona, defeated Colombian Eileen Vargas, 3 and 1, yesterday to advance to the semifinals at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.

Kim, 14, was the runner-up at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links and was the youngest to make the cut at the U.S. Women's Open.

Despite sleeping in until about 11 a.m., Kim struggled with fatigue early in her match. A pep talk by her caddie — who works as a caddie at Pumpkin Ridge — got her back in it.

"I stopped thinking about mechanics and just swung it," Kim said.

Meanwhile, Ayaka Kaneko, a Sacred Hearts junior from Honolulu, lost to Arkansas junior Stacy Lewis, 6 and 4.

Kaneko's game crumbled as the match went on. When her final shot on No. 14 went into the bushes beyond the green, she conceded the match to the 21-year-old Lewis, who will face Katharina Schallenberg, 26, in one of today's semifinals.

Kim will play 15-year-old Lindy Duncan, who defeated Jennie Arseneault, a sophomore at Virginia, by winning the 19th hole.

"Jenny played really well. I was just lucky to keep up with her and put myself where I could halve the last hole and get into a playoff," said Duncan, of Plantation, Fla.

WESTFIELD JUNIOR PGA

Honolulu's Chan Kim shot a 2-under-par 69 yesterday and moved into a tie for 30th after the second round of the boys division of the Westfield Junior PGA Championship.

The 72-hole event is being played at Westfield Center Country Club in Ohio.

Kim, a junior at Kaimuki High School, is at 146 and trails co-leaders Alex Volpenhein, of Edgewood, Ky., and Joe Monte, of Chantilly, Va. by 10 shots. Volpenhein and Monte shot 67s yesterday.

Honoka'a High senior Sean Maekawa of Pa'auilo, Hawai'i, shot a 77 and is tied for 51st at 151. Seabury Hall freshman Robert Greenleaf of Makawao, Maui, shot 83 and shares 72nd at 160.

Kristen Schelling, of Mesa, Ariz., shot a 2-over 73 to lead the girls division at 144. Kaua'i High senior Miki Ueoka shot a 74 and is at 160.

Westfield is the PGA of America's major junior event. It has a field of 156, made up of one boy and one girl champion from each of the 41 PGA Sections.
