Roads extended to ease traffic

Kapolei Property Development, an affiliate of the Estate of James Campbell, will open its extensions of Manawai Street and Kama'aha Avenue at 11 a.m. today. The extensions give motorists an alternative route between Kamokila Boulevard and Fort Barrette Road and are expected to relieve traffic along the congested Farrington Highway corridor.
KPD funded the $6 million project, which extended Manawai near Kapolei Public Library by a block and Kama'aha Avenue by three blocks to connect the two roadways and installed a new traffic light at Kama'aha and Fort Barrette Road.
EAST HONOLULU
BEACHGOER IN CRITICAL CONDITION
A 53-year-old man in "extremely critical condition" was taken to The Queen's Medical Center after being pulled unconscious from Hanauma Bay shortly before noon yesterday, rescue personnel said. The man, who may be a tourist, was reportedly under water for about 15 minutes. No other details were available last night.
BIG ISLAND
WOMAN KILLED IN TRUCK COLLISION
A 42-year-old Pahoa woman was killed yesterday in a collision between two pickup trucks on the Big Island.
The collision on Highway 130 near the 9-mile marker was reported to police at 5:11 p.m. The woman, who was driving a Ford Ranger, died at the scene. A 33-year-old man from Seattle, who was driving a Mazda, had to be extricated from his truck and was taken to Hilo Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Traffic investigator Sgt. Christopher Gali said the woman was traveling toward Pahoa when she crossed the center line into the path of the Mazda. Alcohol may be a factor.

FORUMS SET FOR CONGRESS RACES
Candidates for the House and Senate will appear at two public forums sponsored by the O'ahu Council of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs.
Tomorrow the candidates include U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, running for re-election; U.S. Rep. Ed Case, running for the U.S. Senate; and state Sens. Bob Hogue and Clayton Hee, and Rep. Brian Schatz, running for the U.S. House.
On Aug. 22 the candidates will include U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, who is running for re-election against Case; and state Sens. Colleen Hanabusa and Gary Hooser, former state Sens. Quentin Kawananakoa and Matt Matsunaga, and former Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono, who are also running for the U.S. House.
Both forums will be held at the state Capitol auditorium from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Tomorrow's forum will be broadcast live on 'Olelo, channel 49, on O'ahu; and Akaku, channel 54, on Maui, Moloka'i and Lana'i.
