A woman who received a maximum 20-year sentence in 2001 for stabbing her husband to death received another maximum 20-year term yesterday for stabbing her boyfriend last year.

Sabrina Fiaai, 42, received the 20-year term in 2001 for manslaughter as part of a plea agreement for stabbing her husband, Abe, 36, with a steak knife as he slept at a Makakilo home in 2000. She originally was charged with murder.

Fiaai was on parole last Aug. 15 when she stabbed her boyfriend, Keoni Duboyce, in Kalihi. Duboyce suffered a nick to his hand and a wound to the side of his abdomen.

Fiaai was charged with attempted murder, but as part of a plea agreement, she pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter and agreed to the 20-year sentence imposed by Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario yesterday.

Fiaai was evaluated by court-appointed mental health experts who found that at the time she stabbed the boyfriend, she suffered from a psychosis disorder induced by her use of crystal methamphetamine. One of the experts reported that she suffered from the delusion that Duboyce had killed her daughter, whom she hadn't seen in years.

City Deputy Prosecutor Rom Trader told the judge yesterday that Fiaai was a battered woman who was treated as a "punching bag" by her husband, but the latest stabbing was the result of ice use and violence.

He said the boyfriend loved her, planned to marry her and has no idea why he was stabbed other than Fiaai may have been influenced by her drug use.

Trader called the plea agreement a "fair and appropriate resolution."

Fiaai's lawyer, Keith Shigetomi, said his client accepted responsibility for her actions and feels a "great deal of remorse."

Asked by the judge if she had anything to say before she was sentenced, Fiaai said, "Thank you."

Del Rosario ordered Fiaai to serve at least 6 2/3 years in prison as a repeat offender before she can be released on parole.

Her parole for the stabbing of her husband will also be revoked and she will likely be ordered to serve the rest of that 20-year term. Both 20-year terms will run at the same time.

The plea agreement approved by the judge also calls for Fiaai to write an apology to Duboyce and pay $460 in restitution.
