Off-the-court issues were apparently the main reason for Julian Sensley getting cut from the German national team yesterday.
Sensley, the former University of Hawai'i basketball standout, was the last player cut as Germany trimmed its roster to the maximum 12 for the FIBA World Championships.
"There were just lots of things going on in his head, and he couldn't concentrate on the things he needed to," Germany head coach Dirk Bauermann said on the FIBA Web site.
Germany is scheduled to start playing in the World Championships tomorrow at Japan. Among the players making the German roster are NBA all-star Dirk Nowitzki and former University of North Carolina player Ademola Okulaja.
Sensley, a 6-foot-9 forward, had been practicing and playing in exhibition games with the German team since mid-July. He scored 13 points in an exhibition victory over Canada on July 30.
According to the FIBA Web site, Bauermann said Sensley was struggling with some personal issues, including homesickness.
However, Bauermann said that Sensley could try out again for the German national team next year.
"We told him we're confident in his abilities and that he has a future with the team," Bauermann said. "I'm very optimistic he will come back next time and really play well for us. We would have liked to have taken him with us, but there was too much going on for him."
Sensley was allowed to play for Germany because his mother, Susanne Karsten, was born in Germany and has American and German citizenship.
Prior to joining the German team, Sensley was with the Golden State Warriors' summer league team.
He could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Jerome Stanley, Sensley's agent, said he would look into several options for Sensley next week.
