Man in uniform robs credit union

A man dressed in a military uniform yesterday afternoon robbed the Hickam Federal Credit Union branch at Pearl Ridge.
Police said the man entered the bank at about 5:30 p.m. and handed a teller a demand note. Police said the man was dressed in a tan military uniform.
After receiving an undetermined amount of cash, the man fled on foot. Police recovered the uniform in a nearby alley.
The man was described as 40 to 50 years old. Anyone with information on this robbery is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

STUDENTS HONOR DUKE WITH LEI
Hawaiian students attending the University of Hawai'i's John A. Burns School of Medicine with financial help from the Nadine Kahanamoku Scholarship Fund will this afternoon drape lei over Duke Kahanamoku's statue on Kuhio Beach.
Fifteen students — 10 of them first-year students — currently receive $150,000 from the Kahanamoku fund.
Since the Kahanamoku scholarship program began in 1999, it has provided financial assistance amounting to $1.19 million to 78 UH medical students. The lei-draping ceremony is set for 5:15 p.m., followed by a lu'au at the Waikiki Aquarium.
SCHOOL SEEKING READING TUTORS
Jefferson Elementary School is seeking tutors for its "I Can Read" program that helps students become self-sufficient readers. The volunteer tutors meet with students after school twice a week for 45 minutes in one-on-one sessions. For more information, call Toni Todino at 971-6922.
