No. 21 BYUH surges to 3-0 in Hilo

Tuli Peters amassed 17 kills as 21st-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.), 30-22, 30-19, 30-22, last night to remain the lone unbeaten team in the Hawaiian Style Classic at the Hilo civic.

Lesina Funaki added 10 kills for BYUH, while Natalie Borland led Wheeling Jesuit with 10 kills.

Earlier in the day, Peters hammered 23 kills to lead the Seasiders to a 30-19, 30-21, 30-23 victory over Findlay (Ohio).

Noelle Filimoeatu added 10 kills and Funaki had nine kills and 15 digs for BYUH, which improved to 3-0 in the tournament that features all four Division II teams from Hawai'i.

In other matches yesterday:

  • Chelsea Taylor had 17 kills as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Wheeling Jesuit, 30-24, 31-29, 36-38, 30-25.

  • Alyssa Given had 21 kills as Seattle Pacific defeated Chaminade, 30-21, 21-30, 31-29, 30-23. Trina Kauliakamoa led CU with 16 kills.

  • Lindsay Morrison had 14 kills as Western New Mexico defeated host Hawai'i-Hilo, 29-31, 20-30, 30-21, 30-27, 15-6. Taina Savage had 33 kills for Hilo.

  • Brittnee Fonnesbeck had 16 kills as Chaminade defeated Western New Mexico, 30-19, 30-25, 30-26.

  • Mallory Fleming had 24 kills as Findlay defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 30-21, 28-30, 30-27, 30-26. Barbara Martin and Antje Buskies each had 14 kills for HPU.

  • Alyssa Given had 22 kills as Seattle Pacific defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-21, 32-30, 30-28. Taina Savage led Hilo with 20 kills.
