Moanalua senior Brianna Amian may not have had the highlight-reel spikes and acrobatic digs that teammate Kaleinani Kabalis displayed throughout the season, but her value was recognized nonetheless by league coaches.

The ultimate stamp of approval came with Amian being named O'ahu Interscholastic Association East Division I Player of the Year in a recent vote.

Amian, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter, was a consistent weapon who helped Na Menehune (11-1) win the East championship.

"The coaches felt Bri did so much, and some said they felt they did an OK job on Kaleinani, but they couldn't stop Bri and didn't have an answer for her," Moanalua coach Tommy Lake said. "She hit for a high percentage, and as a captain, she was a leader for us."

Amian, who has signed a letter of intent to play for San Jose State next season, is joined on the OIA East DI all-star first team by Kabalis, a 5-6 junior outside hitter. Roosevelt and McKinley also are represented by two players each on the first team.

Roosevelt placed seniors Kahea Pupuhi and Hoku Oleole, and McKinley placed seniors Jazmine Ma'afala and Lianne Tomishima.

Kahuku junior Leilani Tafuna, Kalani senior Melia Iwamoto and Farrington sophomore Brandi Kahanao'i-Pimental round out the first team.

Lake was named Coach of the Year after Na Menehune won their first 11 matches to clinch the East before falling to Kahuku in the regular season finale.
