Island restaurants ban trans-fats

The Maui Ocean Center's Seascape Ma'alaea Restaurant has joined the handful of restaurants and bakeries here that are eliminating trans-fats from their menus. The restaurant, which reopen-ed after renovations in November, will not use products containing the fats, which have been linked to increased risk of heart disease. Halekulani hotel and Hokulani Bakery are among those which also shun trans-fats, and the KFC chain is banning them from all restaurants by April. New York City recently outlawed trans-fats. Also conscious of concerns about overfishing, Seascape Restaurant serves only fish species that are listed as best choices or good alternatives in the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch guides (www.mbayaq.org).

MORTON'S OFFERS SPECIAL LUNCHES
The normally dinner-only Morton's The Steakhouse at Ala Moana Center will open for a special four-course holiday lunch tomorrow and Friday and Dec. 21 and 22. The lunch starts with a choice of salads (caesar or house salad). Then diners can choose one of six entrees (filet mignon, filet Diane, shrimp Alexander, crab cakes, broiled salmon or chicken Cristopher), served with herbed new potatoes and a vegetable medley. Dessert choices and coffee or tea complete the meal, which costs $35.95 to $50.95 plus tax and tip, depending on choices. Reservations: 949-1300.
