Mamiya, Smith earn honors

Micah Mamiya landed the storied role of Saint Louis starting quarterback this past season, then took a vastly different path from those who had it before him.
Still, the destination proved very familiar — an Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship, and Offensive Player of the Year honors after a recent vote of ILH coaches.
Mamiya, a 5-foot-7, 150-pound junior, gave ILH opponents a devil of a time trying to contain his unique blend of passing and running skills.
Unlike many past Crusader quarterbacks who flourished in a pure run-and-shoot offense, Mamiya did not produce the eye-popping passing statistics (1,569 yards, 12 touchdowns).
But he engineered Saint Louis' hybrid Urban Meyer option/run-and-shoot attack with amazing efficiency, keeping other teams guessing where the ball was and where it would go.
Most importantly, he helped deliver an undefeated (7-0) league season, resulting in the Crusaders' first ILH title since 2003.
Defensively, senior end Scott Smith similarly did not fit the prototype of dominant down linemen from Saint Louis' past.
But he did enough to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors.
At 6 feet 7, 245 pounds, Smith relied on nifty moves and quick feet to corral runners, and aggressive athleticism to sack or disrupt quarterbacks. Smith's presence often bothered signal-callers into making bad throws.
The Crusaders led the way with 12 ILH all-star first team selections. Kamehameha was next with seven, Punahou had three, and Damien and 'Iolani two each.
Saint Louis linebacker/punter Jacob Barit and Damien running back/kick returner Kama Bailey each were named at two positions. Punahou receiver Miah Ostrowski is the only repeat pick.
Saint Louis' Delbert Tengan was named Coach of the Year.
