Kim, Kono lead by 1 at Arizona golf event

Hawai'i's Kimberly Kim and Stephanie Kono each shot 1-under-par 71 yesterday to share the lead after the second round of the Joanne Winter Arizona Silver Belle Championship at Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, Ariz.
Kim and Kono are at 2-under 142 in the 54-hole tournament for females between the ages of 13 and 23.
Kim, 15, is a former Big Island resident who now lives in Arizona. Kono, a Punahou junior from Honolulu, is 17.
Kono and Kim hold a one-stroke lead over Shu Yin Liu (72) of Tualatin, Ore. Ellen Hoeper of Kansas City, Mo., is at 72-145.
Other Hawai'i golfers in the 112-player field are Christine Kim (73-149), Elyse Okada (76-150), Mari Chun (76-152), Kelly Nakashima (73-154) and Kristina Merkle (80-159).
TRAMPOLINE
THREE FROM HAWAI'I ON NATIONAL TEAMS
Three Hawai'i athletes were named to national teams for 2007 and will represent the United States in international competitions in trampoline gymnastics for a second year.
They are:
Matt Moniz, a 19-year-old Leeward Community College freshman, on the senior national double mini-trampoline team.
Nani Vercruyssen, a 14-year-old freshman at Roosevelt, on the junior national trampoline and double mini-trampoline teams.
Spencer Dupio, a 15-year-old Roosevelt sophomore, on the junior national double mini-trampoline team.
All three will attempt to qualify for the world championships and international age group competitions in Quebec City, Canada, in November 2007.
Selection was based on the final ranking of U.S. elites according to points earned in national and international competitions in 2006.
They are coached by Dr. Max Vercruyssen and Japan National coach Yukinori Miyata at Hawaii Academy.

PERFECT GAME USA COMING JAN. 13 TO 15
Perfect Game USA will hold its 2007 Hawai'i Showcase Tournament Jan. 13 to 15 at Les Murakami Stadium at the University of Hawai'i.
It is the second year the event will be held here.
Players participating will be tested in the 60-yard dash, outfield fielding and throwing, infield fielding and throwing from shortstop, first basemen fielding and throwing to third base, catchers' pop times and batting practice.
The players also will be divided into teams to play tournament games in which the players will be evaluated. Written evaluations are put on a Web site for college recruiters and pro scouts to peruse, according to a showcase flyer.
Cost is $549. Deadline to register is Monday.

THREE LOCAL TEAMS FALL
Alaska-Anchorage 85, Hawai'i-Hilo 72: Eric Draper scored 24 points and four teammates scored in double figures for host Alaska-Anchorage.
Carl Arts and McCade Olsen each scored 13 for Anchorage (9-2), and Luke Cooper and Buddy Bailey each added 12.
Travis Sobers scored 18 points to lead Hilo (3-9).
Alaska-Fairbanks 76, Brigham Young-Hawai'i 71: Jushay Rockett scored 33 points and Kenny Barker added 19 for host Alaska-Fairbanks (9-5).
Lucas Alves scored 24 points, Paul Peterson added 12 and Eric Boyce had 11 for No. 19 BYU-Hawai'i (8-4).
Indianapolis 70, Hawai'i Pacific 66: DeAndre Brock scored 23 points, and Braxton Mills added 16 points and 12 rebounds as Indianapolis beat Hawai'i Pacific, 70-66, last night at Mid-Pacific Institute gym.
Indianapolis (6-3) held a 38-28 advantage in rebounds.
Brandon Lee scored 26 points for HPU (6-5).
