A 51-year-old Wahiawa man was charged yesterday with breaking into his tenant's apartment and shooting her dog.

Kenneth W. Hood was charged with one count of first-degree burglary and two firearms violations. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals. His bail was set at $20,000.

Hood was arrested Sunday evening at his Nakula Street home after his tenant, Jenna Day, reported that someone had broken into her apartment and killed her dog. The suspect was identified in a police affidavit as Hood, who is also her neighbor.

Day told police that she left her apartment at 12:30 p.m. Sunday and that her pit bull, Boo Boo, was locked inside. At about 5:30 p.m., another neighbor said he saw Hood coming out of Day's unit and he confronted Hood.

Hood then told the neighbor, "I shot the dog," the affidavit said. A rifle and ammunition were found in Hood's apartment and were turned over to the neighbor, the affidavit said.

The neighbor said he checked the garbage can outside of Hood's home and found Day's dead dog under a blanket, according to the affidavit.

When Day returned home about 7:15 p.m., she found pillows and a quilt from in her home on the grass fronting her apartment, the affidavit said. She also found her dog wrapped in one of her blankets, the affidavit said.

Day told police her front door was forced open and that inside she found a pool of blood on the floor of a spare bedroom.

Police were called and Hood was arrested shortly after 8 p.m. Hood told police the dog had bit him. Hood could not be reached for comment yesterday.
