The Kamehameha Schools boys basketball team takes a blue-collar approach with little flash and no "Street Ball" mentality.

The Warriors don't light up the scoreboard, no one goes off for insane point totals and games are usually close.

But the number in the win column is getting higher and higher and the number in the loss column is still at "0."

Mitchell Kauweloa, Rykin Enos and Kanoa Mokiao each scored eight points as host Kamehameha beat short-handed Maryknoll, 45-35, last night.

Kamehameha improved to 9-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu; Maryknoll dropped to 3-6.

The Warriors put the game away with a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to take a 36-26 lead with 2:52 remaining.

"We had a 9-0 run?" said Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi. "We talked to our kids about having complete games and not turning it on here and there. That was the case tonight, where we had times of brilliance and times we were lackadaisical."

Mokiao, a senior, capped the spurt with a pair of inside buckets, and scored all of his points in the fourth quarter.

"He's come a long way," Nakanishi said. "He played Division II last year and he's improved his game and really worked hard."

The Spartans made just 4 of 18 field-goal attempts, including 1 of 10 from 3-point range, in the second half.

"Realistically, we needed to play a perfect game to beat Kamehameha, especially with the lineup we have. We're a little small tonight," Maryknoll coach Blaine Gier said.

Maryknoll was without starting post players Jordan Ho-Ching and Richard Herring, who were injured in an overtime loss to Punahou Saturday.

"We just didn't make free throws (8 of 15 overall) down the stretch and we couldn't board," Gier said. "We went with a smaller lineup because of injury, but really that's no excuse."

Ho-Ching and Herring both average about seven points and seven rebounds per game, according to Gier.

The Warriors picked apart the Spartans' 3-2 zone and took an 11-3 lead on 5-of-6 shooting from the field just 2 1/2 minutes into the game.

"We were definitely trying to establish ourselves down low and our guards stepped up and made some shots early on, but kind of drifted off later," Nakanishi said.

A field goal by Simeon Ke-Paloma and consecutive 3-pointers by Travis Liu and Zachary Misajon gave the Spartans an 18-17 lead with three minutes remaining before halftime.

Kamehameha led 21-19 at halftime and the game was tied twice in the third quarter. Tyler Tsukazaki's field goal 15 seconds into the fourth quarter got Maryknoll within 27-26, but then the Warriors went on their decisive run.

Kamehameha guard Jacob Ho said the Warriors' goal before the season was to finish among the top 2 in the ILH to avoid the league's tournament for a third state tournament berth.

"We're just one win away from accomplishing that goal," said Ho, who finished with four points.

It was another tough loss for Maryknoll, whose previous five losses were by a combined 17 points.

Kamehameha will next face a tough stretch with games against Saint Louis, Punahou and Iolani on the schedule.

"It's still up for grabs," said Nakanishi about the ILH championship. "I think Iolani, Punahou, Saint Louis and Maryknoll ... anybody can beat anybody on any given night. That's what the ILH has proven. We've had the ball go our way here and there, but we have the three toughest teams coming up. It'll be a true test."
