UH-Hilo splits with Kansas

Matt Haasenritter, Robby Mowers and A.J. Satele each had run-scoring hits in a six-run third inning to lift Hawai'i-Hilo to a 8-6 victory over Kansas and a split of a doubleheader yesterday at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona.
Kansas (4-1) pounded 18 hits to rout UH-Hilo (1-4) in the first game, 17-3.
In the second game, Haasenritter hit a two-run single, Mowers a RBI single and Satele a two-run triple to help give Hilo a 6-2 lead.
Mowers hit a homer to left-center in the fifth inning for a 7-4 lead.
Michael Higa went 3 for 5 and scored two runs for the Vulcans.
SOFTBALL
HPU WINS 1 OF 2
Hawai'i Pacific opened its softball season with a split of a doubleheader with Arkansas-Monticello at Sea Warrior Field yesterday.
Puna Waiolana went 2 for 3 and scored two runs as the Sea Warriors won the first game, 3-2. The Cotton Blossoms (2-2) won the second game 2-1.
CU, BYUH SPLIT
Chaminade scored four runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-all tie and defeat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 7-5, in the second game of a doubleheader at BYUH field yesterday.
BYUH (2-2) won the first game, 11-10. Chaminade (1-1) scored four runs in the seventh inning and had a runner on third when the final out was recorded.
GOLF
SILENT AUCTION SET
A silent auction — in conjunction with the Wendy's Champions Skins Game — is scheduled for today and tomorrow at Wailea's Gold Course on Maui. The auction benefits Hawai'i Canines for Independence.
About 200 items will be up for auction.
The Hawai'i Canines' service dogs are trained to help individuals who are disabled, blind or deaf, children with special needs and residents of nursing homes and hospitals.
