UH harbors postseason hopes

By Dayton Morinaga
Advertiser Staff Writer

Everything and nothing will be at stake for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team tomorrow.

The Rainbow Warriors will host Santa Clara in a non-conference game at the Stan Sheriff Center. Hawai'i will not be able to make up ground in the Western Athletic Conference, but it can start to make a run toward postseason possibilities.

"It's a very important game for us — important as any we have left," Hawai'i head coach Riley Wallace said. "We have to think about running the table if we want to keep playing in the postseason."

The 'Bows are 13-9 overall and 7-5 in the WAC. They have five regular-season games remaining before the WAC Tournament.

Wallace said he thinks the 'Bows would solidify an NIT spot if they win all five remaining games, and could even merit NCAA Tournament consideration if they win all five and then win two more in the WAC Tournament (three wins in the WAC Tournament would give Hawai'i the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament).

Hawai'i is No. 83 in this week's Ratings Percentage Indexes, and Wallace figures five consecutive victories will put the 'Bows "in the low 70s."

"All we're thinking about is the WAC Tournament and getting to the NCAA," Wallace said. "But as a next option, you have to keep the NIT in the back of your mind, and so we need to win this game to keep it all going."

What's more, former Santa Clara basketball coach and athletic director Carroll Williams is now on the NIT selection committee.

"You know he'll be watching, so we have to look good," Wallace said.

The Hawai'i players are aware of the situation.

"We'll settle for the NIT, if that's what it comes down to," Hawai'i senior forward Julian Sensley said. "But we're looking at the NCAA, and the best way to get there is to win the rest of our games."

The 'Bows appear to have a favorable draw in Santa Clara. The Broncos are 9-14 overall and 2-9 in the West Coast Conference.

Santa Clara has lost twice to Gonzaga and once on the road at North Carolina. One of the Broncos' victories was over Bucknell, which is now 20-3 and ranked No. 24 in the national polls.

"They've played a tough schedule and they've been in every ballgame," Wallace said. "We have to be on top of our game if we want to win."

  • Not BracketBusters: Hawai'i and Santa Clara were part of the 100-team pool for ESPN's BracketBusters, but neither was among the 26 teams selected for broadcast on one of the ESPN stations.

Only the 13 games selected for television can be officially recognized as BracketBusters games.

Four WAC teams were selected for television: Fresno State (at Creighton), Nevada (vs. Akron), Louisiana Tech (at Southern Illinois) and Utah State (vs. Northwestern State).

As part of the agreement for being in the pool, Hawai'i will have to play a "return" game at Santa Clara next season.

  • Substitute broadcaster: Tomorrow's game will be televised live in Hawai'i on KFVE (Ch. 5).

Chris McLachlin will fill-in as play-by-play announcer because regular lead broadcaster Jim Leahey and his wife, Toni, will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.

Artie Wilson will continue to be the color commentator.
