Vulcans rally past Cougars

Chris Campbell had two hits and three RBIs, and Clayton Uyechi pitched 3 1/3 innings of two-hit relief as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Washington State, 7-5, yesterday in a non-conference baseball game at Simmons' Field in Kailua, Kona.
Jimmy Crider and Mark Veneri each added three hits and one RBI to boost the Vulcans (3-11), who overcame a 3-0 deficit against the Cougars (6-2) of the Pac-10.
"To get down 0-2 (in the first inning), we could have easily folded, but the character of this team is just progressing and getting better each time," UHH coach Joey Estrella said. "We're just excited for the future, especially for some of these young guys."
Jay Miller batted 3 for 3, including an RBI double in the first, to lead Washington State.
The Vulcans scored four runs on five hits — including RBI singles by Campbell, Crider, Veneri and Robby Mowers — to take a 4-3 lead in the fifth.
After the Cougars tied it in the top of the sixth on Greg Lagreid's run-scoring single, Hilo scored three runs on three hits — including a two-run double by Campbell and an RBI double by Veneri — in the bottom of the sixth.
BASKETBALL
HPU PREVAILS, 88-82
Rick Wilson and Adam Reinking scored 19 points each as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 88-82, in overtime last night in a Pacific West Conference game at Blaisdell Arena.
Wilson scored seven points in overtime to help the Sea Warriors improve to 7-16 overall and 3-6 in the PacWest.
Austin Smylie had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Eric Boyce added 20 points for the Seasiders (12-10, 4-5).
CU WINS, 114-107
Chris Reaves scored 32 points as Chaminade outlasted visiting Grand Canyon, 114-107, in overtime last night in a nonconference game at McCabe Gym.
Dylan McCune hit six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points, Marko Kolaric had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Zach Whiting contributed 12 points and 13 assists for the Silverswords (16-8).
Rich Davis hit eight 3-pointers and finished with 32 points, and Noe Alonzo added 27 points and 13 rebounds for Grand Canyon (17-7).
SOFTBALL
RAINBOW WAHINE SPLIT
Justine Smethurst pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts, and Brandi Peiler batted 3 for 3, including a solo homer, as Hawai'i edged Central Michigan, 3-2, yesterday at the UNLV Rebel Classic in Las Vegas.
Pinch-runner Richie Anne Titcomb scored the go-ahead run with two outs in the fifth, racing all the way from first on Malama Manuma's bloop hit into right center.
Earlier, Peiler hit another solo homer, but No. 22 Oregon rallied for a 5-3 victory.
UH is 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the tournament.
Elsewhere, Simon Fraser swept Hawai'i Pacific, 2-1 and 8-5, at Sea Warrior Field.
Erin McLean had four hits and five RBIs, and reliever Jennifer Schreyer got a win and a save to lead Simon Fraser (2-0).
Dayna Berry pitched a six-hitter with 10 strikeouts in eight innings, but took the loss in the opener for HPU (5-3). Kara Wedemeyer had two hits and an RBI for HPU in the second game.
Also, Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept Chaminade, 5-2 and 11-9, at Central O'ahu Regional Park. Freshman Tess Haertling won the first game and senior Echo Allred earned the second-game victory.
And Grand Canyon scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh to beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 3-2, in the Schutt Sports Division II Leadoff Classic at Phoenix.
