SOCIETY UPDATE: Looks like a celebration of Gary Bautista's life — he died Jan. 30 in Los Angeles after a heart attack while performing a private show with the Society of Seven — won't be scheduled in Honolulu till some time in April, when the group does three shows at the Hawai'i Theatre April 7-9. Tony Ruivivar and Wayne Wakai, two members of the SOS, paused here this week after a Guam show last weekend and acknowledged Bautista's replacement, former SOS regular "Little" Albert Maligmat, has been a fast learner in carrying on the SOS show-must-go-on tradition. Maligmat sang a chicken-skin a cappella "Amazing Grace" at Bautista's burial Feb. 4 in Las Vegas; he's taken on the Stevie Wonder impersonation, matching Bautista's version, and added Lionel Richie to the repertoire.
Over dinner at Romano's Macaroni Grill the other night with Outrigger Hotels' entertainment director Frannie Kirk, Ruivivar said some of Bautista's other classic impersonations have been absorbed by other group members. Ruivivar now is doing a brief Elvis Presley, and Bert Sagum is the new Cher, tidbits to be included in the April shows. While here, Ruivivar also is coaching the SOS Las Vegas spinoff group at the Outrigger Waikiki's Main Showroom. ...
WHEE, THE PEOPLE: Shari Lynn, guest-singing with keyboarder Don Conover Friday and Sunday nights at Shanghai Bistro, has been belting 'em out like a real theatrical trouper. Indeed, her songfest — a panorama of Broadway faves, including roles she's inhabited and tunes she's adopted — is a feast for the ears. Her anthem from "Mame," "Hello, Dolly," "Gypsy," "Side by Side by Sondheim" and "Cats" bear her indelible signature: brassy, bold, beguiling. The applaudience included Jimmy Borges, a long-time vocal peer, and Glenn Cannon, who's directed Lynn on stage, with Rex Nockengust (whose slot Lynn is filling while he's on vacation) also taking the stage to delight the crowds. Restaurant owner Li May Tang was understandably all smiles. ...
"Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek, who already has won three Emmys for Outstanding Game Show Host, is up for a fourth (against Meredith Vieira, of "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire") in the April 28 Daytime Emmy Awards. He's hosted the No. 1 game show for 22 years and "Jeopardy!" has been extended for five more years. Trebek, here for "Jeopardy!" auditions, is using the down time to recuperate from two back surgeries. ...
Ray Bumatai, who died in October after battling a cancerous brain tumor, will be honored at Kailua's Relay for Life, July 8 and 9 at Kailua Beach Park. "Kailua has come together each year to battle cancer and it only seems fitting to share the courage of Ray's battle against the disease with all of the participants," said Briggs Cristie, event chair. The American Cancer Society event has adopted Bumatai's "Brave of Heart" tune from his last CD as an inspirational booster, tweaking the title to "One 'Ohana — Brave of Heart" for the overall theme. Participants may register a team at www.acsevents.org/hi /relay/kailua or at the cancer society's Windward office, 130 Kailua Road, 102B, in Kailua. ...
