UNMARKED POLICE CAR ON THE PROWL
HILO — Hawai'i County police are testing the use of an unmarked police vehicle to catch drunken drivers, speeders and other reckless motorists.
The Ford Crown Victoria does not have the usual blue light on its roof, but instead has LED blue lights above the rearview mirror, in the front grille and on the rear deck of the vehicle. The car also has strobe lights in its head and tail lights.
HONOLULU
WARD AVENUE TO CLOSE AT NIGHT
Starting tomorrow the city will close a section of Ward Avenue for night work for about a month as it makes emergency repairs to the underground tunnels.
The section between Kina'u and Beretania streets will be closed from 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. weekdays.
In October, an inspection under Ward showed several cavities and hollow spots around a sewer tunnel under the road.
Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co. will do the first phase of emergency work including pavement removal, installing concrete to fill the cavities and placing a deck of metal beams and plates over the concrete to carry traffic.
A second phase of the work will include installing metal liner plates to repair the holes.
