UH women win WAC

Nicole Mackey won the 200-yard backstroke and Mia Broden captured the 200 butterfly yesterday, lifting the University of Hawai'i women to its first Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship.
The Rainbow Wahine amassed 775.5 points to overtake Nevada (727) in San Antonio. Northern Arizona (609.5) finished third in the seven-school field.
Mackey, who won the 200 backstroke in 1 minute, 58.86 seconds, was voted by coaches as the WAC Swimmer of the Year for the second straight year. Teammate QiongJie Huang won her second WAC Diver of the Year honor in three years.
UH swimming coach Victor Wales and diving coach Mike Brown also earned conference honors.
Broden won the 200 butterfly in 2:00.80, Rui Wong captured the platform diving with 331.45 points, and the Rainbow Wahine — Broden, Bache Atkins, Elliko Heimbach and Mackey — placed first in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:24.20 yesterday.
San Diego's Ashley Swart, a Kaiser High alum, won her third gold of the meet when she took the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.41.
UH MEN 3RD IN C-USA
University of Hawai'i diver Mats Wiktorsson captured the platform title and was named Diver of the Year yesterday at the Conference-USA Swimming and Diving Championship at the University of Houston's Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
Wiktorsson, a sophomore, scored 379.10 points to easily outdistance Philip Griffin of Southern Methodist, who placed second with 222.95.
Hawai'i finished third in the meet with 583 points. SMU won with 974, followed by East Carolina with 781.
Three other Rainbows won gold on the final day. They were: Thomas Winkler in the 200 backstroke in 1:42.42, Nicola Xella in the 200 breaststroke in 2:00.14, and Greg Wilson in the 200 butterfly in 1:47.75. Xella broke the previous meet and pool records.
BASKETBALL
CHAMINADE WINS TITLE
Chris Reaves scored 39 points as Chaminade defeated visiting Hawai'i Pacific, 99-88, last night to clinch the Pacific West Conference championship at McCabe Gym.
Reaves hit 14-of-19 shots, including 4-of-7 3-pointers, and grabbed eight rebounds for the Silverswords (17-8 overall, 8-3 PacWest), who now have their most victories in Division II play.
Zack Whiting added 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Chris Nelson had 12 points and eight rebounds for Chaminade, which moved ahead to stay at 67-61 on successive 3-pointers by Dylan McCune.
Joseph Ison was 10 of 11 from the field and finished with 23 points to lead HPU (8-17, 3-7). Donnell Dobbins added 21 points, Audrius Peciukas 19 and Rick Wilson 10 for the Sea Warriors.
HILO HOLDS OFF BYUH
Justin Griffin had team highs of 20 points and five assists and Hawai'i-Hilo withstood a frantic finish by Brigham Young-Hawai'i to post a 96-93 Pacific West Conference victory last night at Hilo civic.
Joe Travis added 19 points, Terrance Troupe 18 and Alex Graham 15 for the Vulcans (16-9, 6-5 PacWest), who hit 31-of-38 free throws.
Reserve Sa Tanuvasa scored a career-high 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting to spark BYUH (13-11, 5-7), which sank 10-of-12 free throws.
Eric Boyce also scored 17 points, Paul Peterson had 16 and Wu Tai-hao 11 for the Seasiders, who used a 12-2 run in the game's final 43 seconds to close to 95-93. Justin Dobson's free throw with no time left capped the scoring.
BYUH's Austin Smylie, who was averaging 23 points per game, was held to a season-low nine points on 4-of-14 shooting.
TRACK AND FIELD
UH SEVENTH IN WAC
University of Hawai'i freshman Emily Sheppard high-jumped 5 feet, 7 3/4 inches to set a school record and place second yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in Nampa, Idaho.
UH sophomore Meghan Weaver placed fourth in the shot put with a school-record 47-4 1/4 toss.
The Rainbow Wahine scored 52 points for seventh place, their highest placement in the championships.
Louisiana Tech won with 131 points.
WATER POLO
HAWAI'I TAKES TWO
Lisa van Raalte scored three goals as the fifth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team beat No. 4 Loyola Marymount, 7-4, yesterday in the UCSB Gaucho Invitational at UC Santa Barbara.
Earlier in the day, All-American lefke Van Belkum scored five goals as the Rainbow Wahine rolled past No. 13 Michigan, 9-2.
Hawai'i (6-4), which has won three in a row, plays No. 1 USC today.
SOFTBALL
HAWAI'I-HILO FALLS, 3-2
Becky Hartley hit a three-run homer and relief pitcher Jennifer Schreyer escaped trouble in the bottom of the seventh as Simon Fraser edged Hawai'i-Hilo, 3-2, yesterday in a non-conference softball game at UHH Field.
Schreyer, who gave up two hits and struck out three over 3 1/3 innings, stranded two runners in the seventh to earn a save for the Clan (6-1).
Miki Asamura batted 3 for 3, and Vanessa Badoza had two hits, including a two-run double, to lead the Vulcans (6-8).
GOLF
FUJIKAWA, CHAN LEAD
Teenagers Tadd Fujikawa and Chan Kim shot a 9-under-par 62 yesterday to take the first-round lead of the HPLGA Four Ball Championship at the Ted Makalena Golf Course.
The teams of Ryan Pozar and Jared Young, and Shannon Tanoue and Craig Uyehara each shot 66 to share second.
