Rams' Wantowski to New Mexico St.

Radford High defensive end Russell Wantowski said he has accepted an offer to play football at New Mexico State of the Western Athletic Conference.
"It's a nice fit for me," Wantowski said. "They've been staying in touch with me since last year."
Wantowski was an Advertiser second-team All-State selection at defensive line. He was a O'ahu Interscholastic Association White first-team selection.
Wantowski is 6 feet and 200 pounds, but used his quickness and agility to pursue quarterbacks and chase down running backs. But because of his size, he said the Aggies are considering using him as an outside linebacker or strong safety. He said he played some safety during the ending of his sophomore season.
Wantowski also had an offer Utah State, also of the WAC.
"They've got something good going," Wantowski said of New Mexico State. "They should be competitive in the WAC in about two years."
SURFING
ISLE SURFERS ADVANCE
The Hawai'i contingent of surfers continued its impressive run in the boys division of the Billabong World Junior Championships yesterday.
The third day of the contest was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves at North Narrabeen, Australia.
Five Hawai'i surfers won third-round heats yesterday: T.J. Barron, Hank Gaskell, Granger Larsen, Kekoa Bacalso and Dustin Cuizon.
Mililani's Bacalso led the charge with the best scores of the day. His two top rides received scores of 9.17 and 8.67 for a total of 17.84.
Maui's Gaskell also had a convincing third-round victory with a two-wave score of 15.34.
Hawai'i has five of the 16 surfers remaining in the fourth round of the boys competition. No other country has more than two surfers remaining.
In the girls division, Australia's Jessi Miley-Dyer won the title.
