Chinatown is the place to be today as two celebrations ring in the Year of the Dog.

"Night in Chinatown," 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. along Maunakea Street, is a day-and-night block party of food and crafts booths, entertainment (such as Frank DeLima and Na Kolohe at 7:30 p.m. on the mauka stage), lion dances and cultural demonstrations.

There's a parade, too, beginning at 4 p.m. from the Capitol, down Hotel Street and ending at River Street. Chinese societies, marching bands, Chinese lions, a dragon and others will take part.

Over at the nearby Chinatown Cultural Plaza, a New Year festival is continuing with lion dances, fireworks, food booths, exhibits and entertainment. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Admission to each event is free, but bring along cash for food and to feed the hungry dancing lions (it's good luck!).
