It takes a special team to win 60 consecutive league games, and it takes another special one to end the streak.

Kamehameha's Rykin Enos had a chance to live out every basketball players' dream last night, going the length of the court for the winning layup as time expired in the Warriors' 39-37 victory over Iolani in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game.

The buzzer at Kamehameha's Kekuhaupi'o Gym went off as soon as the ball dropped through the netting, ending the Raiders' win streak that dated to late in the 2001 season.

The play began with eight seconds left as Enos took an inbounds pass on the opposite end of the floor and drove all the way for the winning bank shot against a slow-reacting defense.

"Coach set up a play, just said get the ball, penetrate as far as I can until someone stopped me. No one stopped me so I shot the ball," said Enos, a lefty who hit the winner from the left side of the lane.

Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi set up the mad dash to the hoop after calling a timeout.

"We needed to get all the way to the rim on the dribble and we knew they were in foul trouble," he said. "We were in the bonus so we wanted to get to the rim and draw a foul. He saw a lane and took it."

Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said his defense was confused on the play.

"Our defense is usually what's made us successful over the years and today it let us down on the last play of the game," he said. "We were ready for them to just try and penetrate. We had five guys all playing different things out there at the end."

Iolani's Kawika Shoji said: "We tried to disguise coming out in a zone and we didn't communicate very well and Rykin made a great play."

Iolani tied it at 37 with 10 seconds left on a backdoor basket from Barry Kang to Shoji.

"We were just going through the motion (offense) and Barry saw me go back door and it was executed perfect," Shoji said.

Mitchell Kauweloa scored 11 points and Jacob Ho added nine for Kamehameha, which remained perfect in the ILH with a 6-0 record.

"I don't think it's so much the streak because we know we can be a good team," Nakanishi said. "The potential is there, they just had to put it together. We're just as talented as Iolani."

The Warriors went on a 10-0 run in the first half to take a 15-9 lead with 5:07 left before halftime.

Kamehameha led 19-18 at halftime and there were three ties and six lead changes in the second half. The Warriors' largest lead of the half was four and the Raiders' was three.

The Warriors pounded the ball inside with most of their points coming in the paint off nifty entry passes.

"We had a little height advantage and we tried to open it up for the big men so they could score," Enos said.

Iolani (5-1) primarily settled for jump shots and went to the line only four times, making two. Kamehameha made 10-of-20 free throws.

"We tried to pound it in, but Kamehameha played really good interior defense, rebounding the ball very well and we weren't able to get to the line," Shoji said. "As a result of that maybe we did take too many outside shots."

After a victory over Saint Louis in mid-January, Mugiishi predicted the ILH's champion wouldn't go undefeated this season.

"We just take one game at a time and we try to win. Tonight we just didn't execute our defense at the end," he said.
