Waimea's Castillo picks JC over pros

Kaua'i's Isaac Castillo, drafted by the Minnesota Twins earlier this month, said he plans to attend La Cuesta junior college (Calif.) for at least one year.
Castillo (Waimea 2006) was drafted by the Twins in the 44th round with the 1,324th overall pick as a second baseman.
Castillo was selected as the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation Player of the Year, and earned first-team honors as a third baseman. He was named to the Honolulu Advertiser All-State second team as a third baseman.
"From when I was young, I always told myself I wanted to play pro baseball, but I always told myself I wanted to go to school first and see what college is like," Castillo said. "I think I need a little more experience with the bigger guys. I think college is the best way for me right now."
Castillo said he recently went through some drills with Honolulu-based scout Dan Cox on June 26.
"He saw me hit some balls again, field some balls, took some video, and he talked about signing my pro contract," Castillo said. "I think I'm going to go to school for about a year, and we'll take it from there."

KAILUA NIGHT DOUBLES TO BEGIN JULY 23
The 36th annual Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles will be July 23 to Aug. 5. Hawai'i's best-attended annual tennis tournament will offer a $7,000 purse. Admission is free with matches at 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. each night.
Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen won their second championship in three years last August when they beat Chris Lam and Taylor Bedilion, 7-5, 6-2. Bruggemann and Lam are from Hawai'i.
A portion of this year's proceeds will support junior tennis in the Windward community.
A spectator Gold Pass again will be offered. It allows non-members to participate in the tournament clinic, receive six dinners and preferred parking and seating. Passes are $200, or $380 for two and $720 for four.
The club is at 629 Oneawa St. Free parking is available at Church of the Nazarene.
The first week is qualifying, with July 29, a rain date. The main draw is scheduled to start the following day. Aug. 4 is also a rain date. Call 263-4444 for information.

MIKU UEMURA WINS TWO HEATS IN FRANCE
Miku Uemura of Wai'anae won two heats on the opening day of the Roxy Women's World Longboard Championship contest yesterday.
The first two rounds were completed in 1- to 3-foot waves at Biarritz, France.
Uemura's two-wave score of 14.75 was the best total of the second round.
Kristen Magelssen of 'Aina Haina was eliminated in the second round.
Four other Hawai'i surfers were seeded into the third round: Kula Barbieto, Crystal Dzigas, Janna Irons and Joy Magelssen.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
HOLDREN, SCOTT FALL IN NEW JERSEY FINAL
Casey Jennings and Matt Fuerbringer defeated Dax Holdren and Sean Scott, 16-21, 21-12, 17-15, in the men's final of the AVP Seaside Heights Open in New Jersey on Sunday.
Scott is a Punahou graduate who played at the University of Hawai'i from 1992 to 1995.
Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh won the women's title.
